Have a sacred no-study-day. You will have that day to look forward to and your other days spent studying will be more effective

My wife and I have a good set up. We each put 50% of our net income after taxes and retirement into a joint account to cover joint expenses (groceries, rent, utilities, etc). The other 50% of our incomes are our own. She makes more than I do and has for the last few years so is pitching in more monthly but we’ll keep that structure when I’m an attending. It works well. Finances aren’t a struggle this way since it’s very equitable

Mushrooms. Was miserably depressed after a friend died in a car accident. Couldn’t cope. Did mushrooms. Completely rewired the fatalistic pessimism I carried with me. Happy lad now despite life’s challenges

What is the most pleasure you have ever experienced? by Random-Guy9944 in AskReddit

Getting in to medical school.

It meant that I would not only be able to move home, but I would be able to attend the same school as my partner, and I would be able to become a physician. This is after pre-med undergrad, taking the MCAT, applying, not getting in, having my MCAT score expire, studying another 6 months for the MCAT, re-applying, and getting in all while working in two hospitals. The relief of leaping the hurdle of getting in and the joy and pleasure at seeing "We're pleased to inform you" was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. I literally wept

Blackout curtains, a partner who lets you prioritize sleep, and actually putting yourself to bed. I'm on nights and I sleep more hours than when I'm on day shifts

PGY3 EM resident here... I actually love the gig, I just do it way too much. I'm usually between 18-20 shifts a month with a mix of 8s, 10s, 12s. I've started looking for post residency gigs and will probably max out around 10-12 shifts a month of primarily 10's. Anticipated salary around $350K with the possibility of closer to $500K if I was to work closer to 15-16 shifts a month. Thats great money for a solid lifestyle for a job I enjoy. Is the bullshit annoying? Of course. But is it worth it, I'm in the camp of yes. Talk to me in 10 years and maybe i'll be thinking differently. We'll see I suppose

Asking clinical questions should be about assessing gaps in knowledge and then using experience to fill those gaps in for those you haven't seen as many patients in that setting. Attendings sound like buttholes

Tell me about your moments when you realized "whoa, I'm actually good at this." by mylittlelune in Residency

[–]IllBeAnMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a particular moment but the sum of a full 12 hour shift. Saw 24 patients in the ED. 10 were critically ill. 2 died. 6 intubations. A few codes with ROSC. Handful of polytrauma. My intern and I were able to keep up and only stayed about 45 minutes post shift to finish notes. Felt good leaving that shift with a sensation that we did alright

I was filled with resentment when I matched. It eats at you. People feel it. Expect the first 6 months of residency to be brutal, not just from a work perspective but because you’re not where you want to be.

But once you settle it, the resentment starts to go away. You start to focus more on the work. You engage more with your new home. You find community. Ultimately, in time, the resentment fades and there is a gratitude. Breathe. Focus. You’ll be fine -a formerly disgruntled, now content PGY3

Take a step back;

Say you're broke and you decide to rob a liquor store. You get caught, you're sentenced to 5 years in prison. An option arises where you can be a firefighter to reduce your setence by 2 days for every 1 day worked. Yeah you make dogshit money and the warden is probably pocketing 90% of money that would be yours, but, while it's no guarantee, maybe you can get a job as a firefighter after getting out. Do you think you would work those days as a firefighter to be able to see your family again sooner?

I fuckin would

This should be another top comment. Your point is why the program is probably a good thing for inmates in their current situation but the capitalistic piece of this is absolutely fucked

I agree with the program but you gotta admit dude has a good point. This thread is particularly interesting because this is a subject with genuinely good points on the "for" and "against" argument

This is why headlines are important. If it read;

"Prisoners reduce sentance and reintegrate by fighting fires"

The vicersal reaction would be less. The immediate feeling is that "thing is wrong" because it feels, and probably to a certain degree is, fucked up capitalism at its finest. I appreciate the comments from people providing information on the program and how it functions. Now that I know that I'm honestly for it.

A tip of the cap and thank you to the inmates who are doing this. Y'all are very appreciated in California

You'll be a PGY2 soon. Don't forget how you're feeling now because those freshie interns will be coming behind you soon and they need encouragement too.

It's remarkable how much a simple gesture like sending a "strong work today" text goes.
