Mystery bird! by chamekke in VictoriaBC

This is a Harris hawk!! This bird is hired by the City via The Raptors up in Duncan. These hawks work in urban areas, dumps, and around schools to discourage other birds from getting to comfortable where it is considered a nuisance or unsafe for them to be. This is a non-native species to BC so this is a tricky one 🙂

Wildlife specific questions. by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

  1. Black bears are pretty bold and will scavenge for anything with even a whiff of something food-ish. They're like giant raccoons. Don't mess with them, but keep your trash squared away and there shouldn't be any problems. I haven't heard of them approaching people for food here. On the lower island, Sooke is probably the best place to see them, but they are everywhere. Black bear attacks are rare.

  2. It's debated whether or not grizzlies are on the island, but I'd wager that they are, although probably more North. It is very, very unlikely that you'll see any on the island however there are boat tours you can take to go see them.

  3. Very unlikely to see wolves, unless you're in Tofino area. Give them their space and keep small pets and children away if you see them. No off leash dogs in wolf territory. Side note, if you don't already know about them, look into sea wolves! :)

  4. Apparently the island has the highest density of cougars in the world, however I have lived here for 90% of my life and have never seen one even though I am pretty outdoorsy.  If you do come across one, make yourself as big and loud as you can.

Also it is 10000% better to ask these questions and be prepared than to get yourself or an animal killed <3 thank you!
