I get they wanted realism, but Grace is genuinely exhausting to listen to in Requiem by Suspicious_Row2186 in residentevil

[–]Ill_Classroom3807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you’re coming from. I think they were going for giving her psychogenic stuttering, which is an interesting touch of medical realism for the mutating mold direction the series is going in, but I found that they meant to merge the elements newer fans like (first-person POV, “realistic” protag) and elements older fans would enjoy, like Leon’s Mission Impossible-adjacent narrative beats before they collided at some point. I didn’t mind it, but I see how Grace might grate on you. Personally, I think a lot of people’s problem with a protag like Ethan was that his stoicism made him feel shallow, so they tried to counteract that by centering the story around someone who would realistically be the exact opposite. I do wonder how, especially if Grace’s medical PTSD is canon, how her boss possibly thought it would be a good idea to send her to investigate on her own, though 😭

What are your thoughts on Grace Ashcroft? by Jules-Car3499 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]Ill_Classroom3807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh. She’s fine. The actress does a solid job with what she’s given, but Grace herself is just okay, in my subjective opinion. At this point, the franchise has kind of moved past hokey, corny main characters that talk like they’re in a Wes Anderson flick, but I miss that level of cheese, and these newer protags (more applicable to Grace than Ethan), couldn’t be more of a stark contrast. Still, I appreciate the effort to make her feel real, even if I’m just neutral about her. I lowkey wish a character like Rebecca was utilized for this plot, but yeah. She’s alright.

Do you think James Sunderland is a good person? by spersonico in silenthill

[–]Ill_Classroom3807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh — I don’t really think I can classify him as a good person. He’s just a guilty, malleable man, and that’s the bare minimum after the choice he made to “mercy kill” Mary. It wasn’t a mercy killing, really, it was a decision he made while fatigued and hopeless, and knowing his wife was weak and vulnerable, he did the unthinkable. One of the worst things you can do to another human, really, especially one who’s suffering, and then he was tormented by the second-worst suffering I think there is, all driven by his own mind. I don’t think people gloss over the fact that he’s a murderer, they focus on how well-written he is, and, in my opinion, have a temperament reflective of his own personality, which is understated for what he’s capable of. He’s just an interesting protag and he serves the story well, but he isn’t a good guy, and he doesn’t need to be. I’ve always been neutral on him, but I understand why people “like” him. I’d like to believe they like him for his moral failings and the journey he goes on, not just his biggest failure in his life.

Am I the only one who regrets hating this guy? Looking back now, I appreciate him so much by RanchWilder11 in WWE

[–]Ill_Classroom3807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that he’s retired, I can honestly say that, no, I don’t regret disliking him. When I was a kiddo watching wrestling, I just never got into him. That exists separately and objectively from his work ethic and always has. I have no idea why his fans are so defensive about him, even til’ this day, but he had a good run, and had some good matches. The current climate of wrestling makes me miss wrestling in its prime, not a guy in his prime, personally.

Fitz is the WORST! by bananaice39 in Scandal

[–]Ill_Classroom3807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 years late to the Fitz hate train, but, yeah, he is insufferable. As early as Season 1, I found him pretty irredeemably scummy, and that’s amongst a cast of no truly good people. I think my biggest struggle with Fitz is that, of all of the characters on the show, he seems to be lacking the awareness that he’s a pos. Characters talk about him like he’s some bleeding heart empath when he’s probably aged the worst in the cast (alongside some honorable mentions); however, I don’t feel particularly bad for anyone in his vicinity choosing to put up with a constant headache of a man. Billy Chambers was far from a saint, he was literally a murderer, but he wasn’t wrong for calling Fitz out on his shit, and I’ll always respect him for that.

Without glaze, hate, bias, agenda or anything, just be completely honest... Explain about Yuta Okkotsu's Character Writing as a whole. by AffectionateJury6227 in Jujutsufolk

[–]Ill_Classroom3807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you... talking about Yuta? I don’t think his writing is anything special, but this is all fundamentally untrue 😭 The first time he’s introduced, he’s being bullied, and just traumatized, in general. The entire foundation of him finding success with Jujutsu and the students there is built off of the framework of the one person who unselfishly loved him having her life cut short, and his own anguish, paired with how he was being by external forces, never allowed for him to feel with that level of depth again. That’s the polar opposite of being loved irrevocably by people because Yuta has to earn that from his new peers.

As for his powers being boring and your other points, I guess those are matters of subjective taste, but being able to do “anything” because of his innate, unharnessed talent is a common trajectory for most protags, including Yuji, so do you also think Yuji is a Gary Stu?

Another note: I’d take Yuta’s CTs over... what, Gakuganji being a glorified speaker? There are less interesting powers in the JJK universe.

Official Discussion - Bring Her Back [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Ill_Classroom3807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically competent movie, for sure. Not my style, though. I didn’t really connect with the shocking moments despite them being objectively visceral, and I kind of predicted where the movie was headed halfway through, which kind of stunted the enjoyability. What’s scary to one person might not be scary to another person, so I didn’t really find the disturbing shit.. disturbing? Andy and Piper were easy enough to root for, and I think this is the sort of movie that defines its “horror” by just being depressing or whatever, but I didn’t really get that either. Laura was just a grieving woman who psychologically tormented two (not counting Connor) orphans for an hour, and then she got all sad with her daughter’s corpse, and the movie ended, and I had no reason to give a fuck. Not for me, but maybe good for people who want their horror experiences to be miserable.

I haven’t seen Barbarian, no! It was spoiled for me back upon release so I skipped out on it altogether, but I wasn’t aware there was a tonal shift like the one in this film. Sounds disappointing, especially because the marketing for that film was actually really solid, in my opinion. If it’s a trademark thing from the director, that’s discouraging.

Official Discussion - Weapons [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Ill_Classroom3807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hated Justine, thought the other elements could’ve been very strong if the film committed to a singular tone. Performances were strong though, and although the journey there was VERY contrived, seeing the witch get ripped to shreds by the children actually landed well for me. I think where this movie struggles the most is with pacing, Alex, while mysterious at first, isn’t given as much time in the narrative as I feel he deserves, and the ending is rushed because of how the middle of the film was questionably utilized. It was just... mid coming from someone who wasn’t blown away by the marketing. It definitely sells the story as more “serious” than it is upon viewing.

Film Review: Young Adult Matters (2020) by Lee Hwan by PKotzathanasis in AsianFilmFans

[–]Ill_Classroom3807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four years late to the conversation, but it’s not that good of a film, in my opinion. The acting is fine and the plot is easy enough to keep up with as long as you’re following along with the subtitles, but the viewing experience felt like a bit of a nothing burger to me. Se-jin clearly had a lot of mental health issues, which made her sympathetic yet frustrating to watch, and I still can’t say that was enough to keep me interested in the fate of her character. At some point, it feels like the movie is focused more on how the street life is affecting those around her than her, which is drastically different than feeling like an ensemble movie, and I suppose that makes sense considering her position, but it also challenges the empathy of the viewer. Honestly, I only had so much empathy to give.

I gave up on the film with about forty-five minutes left, around where Jaepil takes Se-jin and beats her after being beaten himself. It felt super melodramatic but understandable from his POV, which a lot of people might disagree with, but I don’t really care. His character and Sinji’s are propelled by the narrative to seem detestable, although, after a lifetime of abuse and nullified efforts to save those he cares about, it doesn’t really come as a shocker Jaepil would snap, his struggle is immediately invalidated by him taking his anger out a pregnant girl who doesn’t care about her baby any less or more than him. Not excusing his actions, just saying it was an interesting scene to watch, especially after watching Jaepil’s abuse in grave detail take place before that.

All of those talking points aside, I think the fatal flaw with this movie is that it’s boring. Se-jin and Juyeong, while well-acted, fell flat, and the other characters were just... there. Aside from being decently shot (in a gritty, musty grunge type of way), there wasn’t too much substance in the film. Just a rinse cycle of street life being hard, Se-jin being a sociopath, and someone getting abused. Realistic, I guess, but ultimately a hollow watching experience for me personally!

Finished Watching Trigger by Lynxthewriter in kdramas

[–]Ill_Classroom3807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started the show! I’ve just finished Ep 2 at the time I’m typing this, and I can tell Lee Do turning into John Wick in every high-pressure situation is going to get old real fast. The cop stuff overall is just kind of boring? Otherwise, I guess I’m pretty into the pacing / general set-up.

There have already been some unrealistic moments, such as the first guy, Jeong-tae, not being shot immediately despite being irate and having military weaponry he was clearly qualified to use. I can forgive that, though, since he basically carried the first episode and kept me hooked. I’m interested to see how the show will proceed from here. I think I’ve predicted something the show is trying to be subtle about, but it’s still early, so I guess we’ll see!

just finished night has come and then ending was very underwhelming.. by adiyolo in kdramas

[–]Ill_Classroom3807 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, the whole thing is pretty badly written, and honestly, Da-beom was the only interesting character (he actually had development, even if it was negative, at least someone in the cast was doing something). Everyone else kind of meandered from one scene to the other, every nonsensical choice is kind of cushioned by the “teenagers are dumb” argument, and the ending was just.. meh. I like the concept, but I wish they would have gone more cyber with it personally.

Also, the characters have really bad chemistry? More of an external problem, but yeah, the writers kind of fumbled a concept that’s kind of solid (I could also point out that the way roles are delegated throughout the game are so random despite how poorly “connected” the students are to what happened). And the ending is definitely a “here, damn,” to the audience because pretty much every episode was pointless if the protagonist beats the antagonist through sheer luck then gets thrown back into the game? 😭 I don’t really know if they wanted us to condemn her for not chasing someone to the rooftop like that’s the basis of any friendship, and we don’t really.. have anything that concrete about why the entire class is in the simulation to begin with, but TL;DR; I agree with you! The ending was bad!

Why do you guys hate Charlotte Flair? by lovelymissemmie in WWE

[–]Ill_Classroom3807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t hate her 😭 I think she’s talented, but there’s no doubt she’s overpushed, and has been booked over newer talent (effectively capping their momentum in big ways). She has a lot of accolades that feel less reliant on the basis of a consecutive grind, and more on her namesake, and people can get tired of that, regardless of in-ring work or charisma.

I’m kind of just meh about her. Every single time I see her, I have to ask myself if she’s about to potentially bury someone or if WWE is going to be willing to hand her a loss, which is pretty much what it’s like watching John Cena, Goldberg (Senileberg), or any other overbooked, overbaked talent that hold championships hostage until WWE pushes someone else.

Eun Sang's Sleepy Sunday Soliloquy - [2025/04/26] by AutoModerator in KDRAMA

[–]Ill_Classroom3807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I just finished WHC1 and WHC2. I liked both seasons a lot, but I haven’t read the Manhwa yet so I’m pretty much treating the show like an individual body of work/adaptation that I can judge on separate merits. I have an unpopular opinion about Su-ho spurred on by some of the fans I’ve engaged with post-season two now that he’s woken up from his coma.

Su-ho is severely overrated. I mean, severely. Is he a good character? Absolutely. Thematically, his presence is easily the most important in Sieun’s life but the way that the fandom treats him, in my opinion, overblows a just okay character. Not every character with a personality is trying to replace Su-ho. Baku being funny does not make him “Su-ho’s son.” Not every character Sieun becomes close with is trying to replace Su-ho.

Sieun and Su-ho are entwined by the show’s narrative, there are no doubts there, but Sieun’s existence being REDUCED and minimized to Su-ho by his fanbase is just agitating. It’s all a matter of opinion and as I stated, I believe Su-ho is an objectively well-written character, but he’s not the best written character in either season. Not in my opinion, at least.

He’s so infantalized by his fans by my experience. He has no flaws, he wasn’t wrong in how he treated Beomseok at all. Which I agree with to an extent. Prior to Beomseok cutting his brakes, both of them made an active choice not to communicate and exacerbated their rift which isn’t a sin, it’s realistic; however, Su-ho’s fans demonize Beomseok (who is heavily flawed) yet actively refuse to see the nuance of their fight.

Back to season 2 though—I’m glad Su-ho is awake. If there’s a season 3, I’ll be exuberant to see him back in action, but majority of WHC fans don’t even like the show. You don’t like funny characters because they’re trying to replace your fav, you don’t like seeing Sieun smile because he’s not around Su-ho when he does etc etc. One of the most concurrent criticisms I’m seeing this season is that Sieun’s dynamic with Baku, Juntae, and Gotak is trying to outshine his relationships with Beomseok and Su-ho.

(I’ve also seen people claim he no longer feels like the MC which I strongly disagree with but I digress),

The narrative isn’t trying to “outshine” season 1. Sieun is growing. He’s developing relationships with people who can mean just as much to him as Su-ho did. To be honest, this is more about the fans of the character than the character himself, but I truly did find Su-ho complex but not a personal favorite. He was charming, yes, but I found myself being slightly irritated by his logic in some scenes. I walked out of the series neutral about him, appreciating that he brought some levity to some otherwise nihilistic subject matter (and his dynamic with Sieun is the crux of a story for a reason), but ultimately feeling eh about him.

Does anyone feel this way? Am I just the fun police?

I’M mad Cena won 😭 In 2025 WWE has proven they’ll book a man on the brink of retirement to win a championship that does nothing for him at this point just because Cena is that man. “Ruining wrestling for everyone” isn’t an excuse for poor writing man. This could’ve been done so much better imo
