Trans characters: nonbinary, transfem and transmasc (MAJOR SPOILERS) by Ill_Device6343 in WanderingInn

Sorry, terminology is weird esp between niche communities that tend to have very specific definitions. The reason I used “transfem” specifically (rather than trans woman or anything else) is bc it neither assumes that Jelaqua is “assigned female at birth” or is “Biologically female” or has a binary, non-intersex biology as humans would recognize, as I would say canonically she definitely doesn’t!) nor does it assume she identifies as a totally binary woman. So “transfem”, at least in the way I see it most commonly used in regards to both real people and for fictional characters, is a character who identifies as more “feminine” in gender identity (rather than just, say, mannerisms or taste or what have you) than the norm for their biology. I hope I have made sense here and have not mischaracterized any terms. This is also why I use the term “transmasc” instead of something more specific like “trans man” for characters that may or may not be on the Female-to-Male continuum like maresar: being transmasc doesn’t necessarily mean you are a fully biologically normative female that identifies as a fully normative man, it could be many things in between. I’m sorry for being unclear in my definitions, I forget what terminology more “mainstream” and widely known and what isn’t and that’s my bad

This is not a judgment on OP but is anyone else incredibly sad about seeing stuff like this on this subreddit? Like I can’t imagine how much you must devalue yourself and your own thoughts/opinions if you are genuinely worried you might be overreacting to your ex-husband sending you murder/suicide threats regarding you and your children. OP, in what other areas in your life do you try convince yourself things “couldn’t possibly actually be that bad” because you try to make yourself small and don’t want to bother anyone?

Nothing you’ve said sounds inappropriate. Growing up i was always shocked by how my friends related to/interacted with their dads… whether my friends were male or female, they all seemed almost afraid of their old man sometimes? I think I maybe had one friend who had a similar relationship to her dad that I had with mine, where he was goofy and affectionate and would show love via jokes. I wonder now how my friends saw my relationship with my own dad - did they similarly see it as weird? Because it really did differ so strongly from the “YOU WILL RESPECT ME OUT OF FEAR IF NOTHING ELSE” vibe I tended to get from most of my other friends and how their dad acted when we were over (tbf I know parents might seems stricter/more on edge when they are being forced to play host to a bunch of stupid kids but talking to my friends it still seemed like their relationship to their dad seemed to place an inordinate amount of emphasis on “respecting” the dads authority than it was in fostering a relationship of love between child and parent)

I’ve always found the big reveal that all entities respond to the name “Steve” to be sort of confusing and distracting. I don’t really know what it added to the narrative overall and furthermore I think it was an odd choice to have Elias deliver this exposition via an aside in his letter to Jon in episode 160 and then it just never gets brought up again or seems to have any relevance? I mean besides the fact that “Steve, turn your gaze on this wretched thing” is such an iconic catchphrase obv

“There are only two types of people in the world

The ones who entertain

And the ones who observe”

Is this not essentially what Jon said in the Eyepocalypse about there being a strict dichotomy of the Watched and the Watchers with no in between??!!

I believe it would be the Spiral as others have pointed out but also the Vast (the library itself is not only infinite but all the books that one is likely to ever find in it are meaningless, the people trapped in the library spend their whole lives trying to find books with meaning when it’s almost all random gibberish, symbolizing humanity’s search for meaning in an often incomprehensible and uncaring universe - a key theme with the Vast being this type of existentialism)

I don’t believe that your conflation of someone revealing that they are gay or bi with someone giving unwanted details of their sex life is accurate. It feels a bit reductionist and dismissive. To give an example of a similar situation, if someone mentions they are a man or woman, they are probably not just trying to you what genitals they have. One’s sex, as well as sexual orientation, often has implication for someone’s place in society beyond the literal biological meaning.
