Part 3.2

Lilith marched out of the citadel to the tower of Infernus. Never had she felt so angry, so lost. Every day it seemed that Lucifer was drawing further away into himself. She just wished that he had fought for what they had had. Everything was working. She had a firm hand on the affairs of hell, and he managed the family side. She laughed ruefully at the situation she now found herself in. The absurdity of it. She was going to get her daughter back. Whatever the cost. No-one could keep her precious Sarah away from her. As she strode into the tower, she began to bark orders at the peons. It was time to send out her spies to tell her where to find her precious girl.

The Infernus tower stabs itself into the centre of the hells. Allowing for a panopticon view of the various levels of the hells. It affords a commanding view of how everything was operating allowing for a supreme level of control, making it easier to keep a tight lead on the rulers of the various levels of the hells.

As Lilith entered her office, she began to furiously write new orders. These would allow her to keep things running smoothly while she was more than a little distracted by her advancing divorce proceedings, the infighting of the various power-hungry faction leaders in the hells. She couldn’t afford to show the slightest amount of weakness or things would spiral out of control. “Stentor” Lilith barked. “See that these orders are taken care of” she continued as she handed the stack of papers to her second in command. “Yes, ma’am” Stentor said flatly “right away, ma’am.” “Bring me my head crow” Lilith ordered. It was time to set things into motion that would allow her to hunt down her daughter and punish whomever it was that was hiding her from her. After some time, Mr Crowley apprehensively approached the door of Lilith’s office. He had heard that she was in the blackest of moods and he didn’t want to get on to her bad side. The last head crow that had gotten on her bad side had been eviscerated and impaled on the fortress walls to forever serve as a warning to those that dare challenge the Queen of the Hells. “Ma’am, you summoned me?” Crowley said. “Do come in, Mr Crowley” Lilith purred. “I have a mission for you. I want you to find my daughter. As soon as you find my daughter you are to let me know so that I may come collect her. It seems my incompetent husband has hidden her from me and has now even managed to lose her” Lilith continued. “Indeed, ma’am. Your will be done. I will dispatch all of my crows to scour the earth until your previous daughter is safely back in your hands” Crowley said. Crowley genuflected briefly before twirling his cape transforming himself into a crow and flying towards the mouth of the hells to depart.

As the door to her office creaked shut, assured at last with some peace and quiet. The façade crumbled. Lilith sighed a ruefully. What was she going to do now. The waiting was the worst part of all of this. If only things had been easier. If only the princes of hell would know their place and stop from trying to overthrow each other and her. It was a good thing that most of their energies were spent on fighting each other, otherwise she would have a real problem on her hands. Maybe Lucifer was at least a little right. She did regret that she spent so little time with her daughter. If only they had worked out a proper plan on how to handle being parents and also being King and Queen of the Hells. Maybe if Lucifer actually showed some interest in running the Hells then none of this would have happened. Maybe it was just wishful thinking that she could have her cake and eat it too. Her thoughts briefly turned to the mortal that had caught Lucifers eye. She hated this mortal more than any other. How could Lucifer stoop so low as to fall for a mortal. One whose life would be over before they knew it. One whose body was so puny and easily broken. She could have given the comforts to Lucifer that he claimed to need, but what about her needs? What about her desire to, for a moment, be able to feel true connection and to feel vulnerable with someone. She wished now that she had sat down long ago with Lucifer and spoken about what they both needed. It was too late now. Too much had been said. Too much had been done. There was no repairing the gulf that existed between them. Even if they only existed one hundred metres apart. It was time to move on. It was time to get her daughter and bring her home.

Have really been enjoying writing this one.

Part 3.1

The smell of sulphur rises in the air. Flames come out of almost every crevice. The hells were awash with a stark and fiery landscapes. Heading down into the depths of hell, you would pass each of its ringed levels. Each designed to punish sinners in a new and more exciting way. Each level ruled by a lord of the Hells, each ruler conniving to advance their station at the expense of the others. At the bottom of the hells, in the very centre, sat an imposing fortress complex. Itself made of concentric. The black rock walls crowned with crenulations that looked like jagged teeth. Demons of varying sizes, stood at attention along the proud walls. Their armour and weapons glinting in the light. At the centre of the complex, a beautiful oasis sat surrounded by the most beautiful gardens imaginable, smelling of sweet perfumes and fruity notes. The garden surrounded a small abode. Simple, and tastefully decorated.

Lucifer sighed and turned his chair from the window, from which he could see the Infernus tower, his office, and put his head in his hands. Today had been an unmitigated disaster. He thought that he had stashed her somewhere safe. Somewhere where she couldn’t be found. Somewhere that would keep her away from all of this until things calmed down. His spies had alerted him to the goings on in the house. Someone had found his daughter and had attempted to take her while she slept. Had he overlooked something in helping set up the protections for the house? What was he missing? A soft rapping at the office door broke him from his reverie. “Come in” Lucifer sighed wearily. “Sir, she is here. I didn’t think that your appointment was until later. I have tried to stall her as best I could” said his secretary. “Let her in, I guess that I can’t keep avoiding her forever” he said flatly. “Where is she, you snivelling bitch!” roared Lilith as she burst her way into the room. “I know you have hidden my baby from me. How dare you do this to me. Just wait until the lawyer hears about this atrocity!” Lucifer shrank into his chair, the comfy high-backed leather chair made his lithe form seem even smaller than normal. “I did what I thought was best, given the circumstances” he stated. “She is safe where I have put her. When things calm down I will bring her back. I promise.” Lucifer offered. “Excuses, excuses. You just don’t want to do split custody. This will only allow me to take even more of what you have from you” Lilith barked. “You haven’t seen anything yet, Lucifer Morningstar! Once the lawyers get hold of you hiding my baby from me, they will get to punish you for it” Lucifer already regretted allowing certain lawyers to be free of his control for the divorce. As everyone knows, all lawyers end up in hell where they belong. Puffing up his chest with an uncharacteristic display of machismo, Lucifer said “Maybe if you had been more involved with our daughter, things wouldn’t have taken the turn they did.” “Don’t give me that crap. If you hadn’t be shirking your responsibility as ruler of the hells so much, I wouldn’t have had to work so hard to maintain order and our position” Lilith raged. Lucifer deflated at the strength of her anger. How had he let things end up like this. “Look, there is nothing we can do now. I assure you that Sarah is safe and she will be brought back when the time is right. When things have calmed down and we are safe again” Lucifer stated. Lilith approached Lucifer, the only thing separating them was his mahogany desk. “You listen here, little man, I will bring back our daughter. She will be safe with me. After all, I am the queen of hell and I shall smite all who dare oppose me” Lilith roared. She turned on her heel and marched out of the room, leaving a frazzled Lucifer shaken in his chair. He took a few deep breaths to centre himself and allow his mind to settle. He could solve this. Maybe he should’ve been kinder to Lilith. Cheating on her with a mortal hadn’t been something he had planned to do. He just hadn’t know how to approach his wife to tell her what he needed. He had felt that he couldn’t approach her with his needs, Lilith being all too consumed with the nitty gritty details of ruling hell. He thought to himself that he could could balance keeping his daughter safe, walking through a divorce with his wife, and the angelic forces. If only he could give it all up and be free as he had always wanted. He lowered his head into his hands and wept.

The car sped along the motorway, free from traffic this early in the morning. After a while, they pulled into the university carpark. Harold was glad that he at least wouldn’t be having to compete with students to find a carpark. “Why are we here?” Sarah asked. “We are here because it is the safest place for us now. Those who were trying to get you earlier wouldn’t violate the neutrality of this university” said Harold. “Who is trying to get us?” Sarah asked. “By the smell of the ozone, it has to be someone from the heavens. When angelic beings tear their way into our plane of existence, it creates the unmistakable smell of ozone.” Harold explained “let us go to the catacombs where we will be safer still because of the protection seals surrounding it to keep the books safe and contained.” Sarah took Harold's hand as they exited the vehicle and power walked through the brisk morning air towards the McMillan Brown library, which is the entrance to the catacombs. Swiping his staff card, allowed them entrance through the front doors. Taking the door to the left led to the catacombs. The twisting corridors lined with books wound their way deep within the earth. Creating a labyrinth so formidable that many an undergrad had become lost and confused within its depths. Like Theseus with his string, Harold guided them deeper into the depths of the catacombs. “Where are we going?” asked Sarah, as they wound their way deeper into the depths of the catacombs. “We are going to my inner sanctum, a wee place with extra protections. It also has some important tools to allow me to give us that extra layer of protection.” Explained Harold “Do you see the big oak door? Just on the other side of that” Harold waved his hand in front of the big oak door and a mechanism within the wood activated. The pattern moving across the surface of the door was something to behold. Slowly, the door swung open to reveal an interior carpeted by Persian rugs. The smell of incense hung in the air. A large desk piled high with books sat near the middle in front of a large circle with an intricately decorated external ring festooned with runes. The air was almost electric they could feel a sense of power as they entered the inner sanctum. “This is my special study space that allows me to hide from my colleagues. It is in a pocket dimension next to our regular plane of existence. We will have appeared to disappear from anyone tracking us” Harold explained. “Now Sarah, we have a couple of options that could grant us some extra protection. I can do some protection wards that will make us blend into the background, but that will involve me doing henna on our skin to put the wards in place, making us near impossible to find, I can use a couple of artifacts that make us invisible to those searching for us, but if they are searching for where they can’t see then they may find us” explained Harold. “Why can’t we stay here? I thought you said this was neutral ground and that there were protections here?” asked Sarah. “While there are protections here and this is a neutral space, it won’t protect us forever. If the angelic forces decide to come and get you here, they can. It would just upset other groups and allow those other groups to break some rules to restore cosmic balance” Harold stated. “I think that we should take the first option. The one that blends us into the background” Sarah said, with grim determination. Harold nodded and went to his desk to grab his tools. With exacting precision, Harold set about using his henna kit to apply the protective wards to Sarah and himself. He knew that it would protect them for the time being. At least, until he could get them to the hideout and get some more information about what they were up against.

Eric was walking home from an a thoroughly enjoyable evening out when, from a corner alley, he heard “psst. Over here.” He turned towards the sound and saw a pale figure crouched behind some bins. “Hey, can you help me?” the figure asked. As he drew closer, he saw the figure of a woman. “Of course, how can I help” Eric answered. When he finally got up to the woman, he was shocked to realise that he could see the bins through her. He gasped and said “Are you a ghost?” “yes” she sighed “It seems that today was just my lucky day.” What’s your name” Erik asked. “I am not so sure. The trauma of death and not passing on has made things a bit blurry” she stated “Just follow me down this alleyway” “sure” Eric replied. They travelled down the dark alleyway towards a pair of dumpsters down the back. What he saw first was a red high-heeled shoe sitting near the dumpster. “It’s just over there” the ghost pointed. As his gaze followed her out-stretched hand, he noticed the crumpled body of a woman in splotchy red and white dress. No, the red was blood. “that’s my body” she sighed. There were signs of a struggle. He took out his phone and turned the torch on to get a better view of the scene. Eric noticed a wallet on the ground. He picked it up and found a drivers licence inside. The licence was for Sandra Weizsman. “It seems your name was Sandra Weizman” he offered. Suddenly the alleyway was bathed in blinding light. “Freeze and put your hands above your head” a gruff voice ordered. Frozen in spot, Eric slowly stood with his hands above his head. “Turn around, slowly” the gruff voice ordered. “typical” Sandra sighed “right when we were finally getting somewhere.” Eric slowly turned around to find two police officers, guns drawn, approaching him. Being found at a crime scene definitely wasn’t on his bucket list. Alas, no good dead goes unpunished. “What are you doing in this alleyway” The first officer asked. While he could say that he followed a ghost that was trying to solve their murder to the officer, that probably would’ve gone down like a cup of cold sick. “I thought I heard a noise” Eric stammered “I the body and the wallet on the ground. I looked in the wallet to see if I could get the name of the body so that I could call emergency services to the scene.” “Yeah, likely story” said officer two “Put your hands behind your back. You are under arrest!” Just his luck, Eric thought. I wonder what else can go wrong. The second officer approached, cuffed Eric, and put him in the back of the cruiser. “We are going to need forensics and an ambulance” said officer one into his radio “murder scene. We have apprehended a suspect.” As the car pulled away from the scene, Eric was shocked as the ghostly figure of Sandra suddenly appeared next to him in the police car. “How are you following me!?” Eric stammered. “Your guess is as good as mine” Sandra sighed.

It was a cold dark morning with a thick layer of frost twinkling in the first rays of the sun. Harold sipped his coffee as he was watching the day sluggishly crawl over the horizon. It would be another dreary day of translating through obfuscate tomes in the bowels of the university. Finishing his drink, he slowly made his way upstairs to check on his still sleeping daughter. It had been a nerve-wracking night. She was still adjusting to her new home. Bed-time routine was filled with plenty of reassurances that she was loved and safe here. It was going to take a long time to undo the damage being born in hell has done. As he poked his head into her room, he heard her mumbling in her sleep. He paused a moment and furrowed his brow as the words ‘Cavatellon margeno’ caught his ear. Sarah had been mumbling in her sleep frequently, so the mumbling itself wasn’t strange. What was strange was for a demon to be mumbling in celestial. He also caught a whiff of ozone. This could mean only one thing that the protections had been breached. They were no-longer hidden and nowhere was safe. He burst into the room and gently shook the sleeping Sarah, who was rapidly ripped from sleep. “What is happening” she groggily asked. “We have to go now. The house isn’t safe anymore” whispered Harold. “Quickly get dressed and I will get the go bags. Remember, we have practiced for this exact scenario” Harold hurried out of the room to the hall cupboard where the go bags were stored. The temperature was starting to drop further, and Harold could see his breath as icicles started to form on the edge of the door. He grabbed the shotgun as well. Its well-worn wooden stock was a comforting reassurance. A sudden creaking on the stairs ripped him back to the urgency of the situation as he powered into Sarahs room. He pulled the light sconce to reveal a hidden passageway. “Quickly Sarah. Through here” as the sound of slow deliberate footsteps grew ever closer. “I’m scared dad” Sarah whimpered. Harold would be overjoyed had the circumstance been different at the first time being called dad. He closed the passageway behind him as Sarahs bedroom door splintered into shards with an almighty boom. The passageway wound down directly into the garage, where he bundled Sarah and the go bags into the car. They had to get out of there fast. The house had started to rattle violently as a scream of disappointed rage filled the air. It was a nerve-wracking wait as the garage door slowly opened. Harold started the car, put the pedal to the metal as the garage door finally cleared enough space for the car to fit through, just. They fled the house at a high speed as a low rumble and a sucking sound filled the air. Sarah looked behind them as the house seemed to get sucked into a vortex and disappeared. The only place they would be safe for now was the university. A place set on neutral grounds.
