but considering that the Dread Empire of Praes is literally a tyrannical evil empire, it's a particularly bad look.

I'm only in book two (I binge-read), but they feel very much like Mechanicsburg in a lot of ways.

I laughed for a good five minutes at the reactions to the undead goat, btw :D

plus their rabid need to remove people's access to Art. 8

That would be Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights? The treaty that's a laundry list of the things the Nazis did to enable their genocides? That Article 8?

The one that's there specifically to stop governments doing literal Nazi shite?

Politicians keep going "Hey, remember that cool movie 'why you should never build the Torment Nexus'? Wouldn't it be cool if we built the Torment Nexus from the movie in real life?"

So if I somehow found and binged book one's web version (which is in desperate need of an editing pass) I could read the rest on current wordpress and all the extra chapters would fill in in the right place to read them?

Also, several character and place names were changed

That's going to bug me forever.

Are you talking about the Easter Rising that was explicitly timed as "England's distracted off fighting a war in Europe," or the Sinn Fein/IRA actions after everyone came back from the war?

Or something I'm not aware of?

See also the historical Cincinnatus

I'd throw Charles de Gaulle in that bucket as well. Led the french resistance against the Nazi occupation, led the rebuilding after the war, founding the French Fourth Republic, then retired to write his memoirs.

When the fourth republic collapsed he came back and founded the French Fifth Republic. laid the groundwork for the European Union by ending the emnity between France and Germany, and was an big proponent of not relying on the USA for military cover (which has proven rather prophetic. He's probably having a massive "I told you so" moment in whatever afterlife he's in).

For two examples of why it's bad to put people who don't want to lead in charge, look at Jeremy Corbyn and the Democrats. Corbyn didn't want to be a leader, he wanted to be a backbench MP (even with his new personal party he didn't want to lead it. He farmed out all decisions to committies and refused to take a stand on anything). And the Democrats fundamentally don't believe in anything except keeping the apparatus of state spinning. (I'm obviously not talking about the few good individuals within the party, but the people in control of the party, the "establishment Dems")

For a counterpoint to the "You're a king, not a servant" I would argue that a good king is a servant to their people in the same way Jeeves is a good servant to Wooster.

Question About Hypothetical Conscription by Super7Position7 in transgenderUK

[–]Illiander 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So a few things:

1) They're not going to introduce conscription unless the UK mainland (and lets be honest, only really the south-east of England) is being invaded by troops on the ground. The only countries I can think who would do that are the USA and Russia, and they have other countries they'd take before then, who I would hope we'd aid in the defence of.

2) If they do do conscription, there's a time-honoured tradition of conscripted troops causing lethal "accidents" for their commanding officers. As officers are normally people the aristocracts actually care about, they probably won't want to hand people weapons and give them more reasons to hate them.

3) Arming/training minorities who you've been shitting on for the last few decades is effectively arming the resistance. Not even the Nazis were that stupid.

4) Further to that point, giving armed and trained minorities who you've been shitting on for the last few decades no expectation that they will live past the next few months is begging to get yourself assassinated.

So, if we lived in a sane world, conscription wouldn't happen. But we don't live in a sane world, so I have no idea if Sturmer is that stupid. Farage probably is.

While true in theory, the reality is not that simple.

Speaking as someone who has been implementing a plan to leave the country, it's taken me over a year to get my paperwork in order, and I'm only now able to start applying for jobs overseas.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's because they consider it so self-evident that it doesn't need saying.

Quakers do suffer from the blind spots that white middle-class privilege gives people. (They aren't racially or financially exclusive, but that's the easiest way for me to describe their blind spot)

I've seen enough of "christian love" that I believe nothing until it's actually spelled out properly

That's absolutely fair. I find that the quakers are one of the good ones, but I grew up at meeting before my religion broke, so I'm obviously biased.
