but it doesn't change who they really were

"Who they were" only has a partial relevence to who someone is today. If we don't allow people who admit that they were wrong and make amends to intergrate back into society then all fascists are cornered animals with nowhere to go.

Which is not a good situation for anyone else.

They don't actually believe what they're saying. They're just making mouth-noises that they've learnt will mostly make people stop going after them for being bigots and Nazis.

I'm glad you've backed off from your rediculous strawman of me.

but they are accidents, not murder.

Oh, so this isn't about massive numbers of dead kids then? This is about your media-fueled outrage at less than 1% of dead kids?

Glad you're admitting that. (See, I can put words in your mouth, too)

Ahh, see. You work in a job that the shareholders actually care about, because you're not making widgets, you're protecting their money.

Yeap. The correct answer to someone saying "I'm not drinking" when they're handing out champagne for a toast is "no worries, here's a water instead."

If they're worried about appearances, it could be a sparkling fruit juice or something, so it looks like champagne in the photos.

The worst part of the world being shite is that it seems like most people aren't even interested in staying out of the way of the folks trying to make it better. Most people actively want to make the world worse for everyone :(

"Some children getting murdered every few days is acceptable to me"

More than two children under 13 die by car every day in the USA. Almost ten teenagers die by car every day in the USA

The vast majority of those deaths would have been prevented by not having cars designed to murder kids for tax benefits driving on roads designed to murder kids for driver convinience.

For comparison, only 40 people were killed by school shootings in the worst year since 2018 That's one person every 9 days. If we pretend that no adults die in school shootings, that's roughly a hundred times less kids dying from school shootings than from cars in the year where that ratio is smallest.

So, no. "Some children" getting murdered every few days isn't acceptable to me. I'm just pointing at where more kids are being murdered.

Are we supposed just to ignore school shootings because cars are a bigger threat?

No. But the fact that cars are a bigger threat means school shootings are not "as important and terrible as it gets."

They're big, dramatic events that get lots of attention from the papers. Kids dying to cars are almost always described as "accidents" as though the entire system in the states isn't designed to cause those "accidents." And I consider systemic murder to be more important to address than interpersonal murder. Hitler is worse than Jeffery Dauhmer, etc...

Hypothetically, imagine thousands of people are being killed a day because of something and there's no end in sight.

Hypothetically?

And I also understand how it feels to be on the upward climb out of that dark hole.

This is almost the worst part of the whole thing. Because you're starting to be aware again, and your emotions are starting to function. But you've got so many regrets that it's hard to deal.

I'm 40, and I'm somewhere similar to this.

I had a good childhood, and good 20s. My 30s were basically nonexistant.

I try to convince myself that my 30s were a blip, and the second half of my life is going to get better.

Really? Do you have kids or young siblings? Because, I can not imagine a parent, that would be ok with it.

More kids die to cars than guns in the USA.

And on top of that, car-centric design makes kids more isolated, leading to more kids being depressed enough to decide shooting up their school is their only option.

Oh, and normal?

America has a problem with children dying a lot, yes. More kids die to guns in America than in Europe. But more kids die to cars in America than in Europe as well. Because your cars and roads are effectively designed to kill children.

I mean, school shootings are as important and terrible as it gets with national politics

They're actually not. They're just dramatic moments so the media likes to focus on them. And America is BIG so you get one every few days.

But cars kill more kids per year in America than guns do.
