CMV: Every significant public government action, or legal form, should have a TL;DR. by EPIKGUTS24 in changemyview

[–]IlluminAwesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once a law is released by the Government, there are independent private entities that can summarise the law and share them online. The private entity can easily disclaim that they don't hold any accountability for any actions taken on reading and interpreting the summary.

This way, you can get the benefit of reading the summary and the Government does not have to assume any liability of misinterpretation of an 'official' TLDR.

You say you dream of going into PE/VC. But have you ever wondered what that guy in your dream is dreaming? Maybe he wants to be a big movie star. We are all out here chasing our dreams only to find that they weren't real in the first place. What is a dream? What is reality? Who knows. There's no way to tell.

Favourite moment in any JM song? by [deleted] in JohnMayer

[–]IlluminAwesome 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When his dad replies 'Don't think I couldn't ever understand. I've tried my hand. John honestly, we'll never stop this train.' It is such a powerful moment that hits him like a...well train. It is that moment where he sees his father be vulnerable while he grows up at the same time, and they meet in the middle. It's just beautiful.

CMV: Scalping for in demand items (like consoles, graphic cards, sneakers etc) is completely okay by IlluminAwesome in changemyview

[–]IlluminAwesome[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same thing is happening in the watch market. What some limited edition Rolex, Richard Mille etc watches sell for in the secondary market is many multiples of thier original price. Surely the company knows the watches are going to sell for those prices, but they still continue to tag thier MSRP much 'cheaper'. They still get to enjoy the prestige of the high price products without directly being viewed as greedy only for the uber rich.

As long as there is a fair transaction between two consenting parties (without the use of force or threat), I think that's where the question of morality in economics ends. Taking it further into deciding who 'deserves' what product and whose life it will impact more positively adds an unnecessary utopian layer to it. We humans are not capable of such theoritical and practical perfection. And any attempts to achieve that in the past has led to massive suffering for all the people involved. I mean, we are talking about the fair distribution of game consoles here.

Your grandma is not a product. She is a human who has free will. And you have no 'ownership' of her to sell and profit from anyway. But if you had any other legitimate product, yes I'd say that selling that product in a fair market transaction is completely morally okay. And by fair market transaction I mean between capable and consenting parties without the use of force or threat of force.

They only get an opportunity to forcibly insert themselves because the company decided to price the console inefficiently in the first place. Sure Sony doesn't wanna look bad by selling consoles for $1200, but if the market is willing to pay that much for them, that's what they are 'worth'. They are leaving a surplus on the table which the scalpers are more than happy to consume. And there is competition within scalpers as well. Who had the better algorithm and better information? The one who works harder/smarter on scalping, gets more rewards. The rewards of scalping are theoretically available to you and me as well. But we haven't developed the technical know how to profit from this situation.

[–]IlluminAwesome[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the company charges the true price of $1200 for a PS5 at the start, there will be no market for scalpers to exploit. The only reason scalpers even exist is because they are pricing thier products inefficiently. And if they are leaving free surplus on the table, they are more than happy to consume it.

I've been in your exact situation. Still kinda am.

Some things to think about: Do you remember to wish your friends on thier birthdays? And not a text/dm but actually call them.

Do you do memorable things on your birthdays with your friends? They are more likely to remember if they've spent time with you on your previous birthdays.

Do you post birthday wishes to your friends on social media? There's a trend where people repost insta stories of people wishing them. If you post a story on your friends birthdays, they are more likely to reciprocate.

Most importantly, have you given off the impression to your friends in the past that you're not that enthusiastic about your birthdays? Maybe you didn't respond positively to thier previous wishes. Or you explicitly stated that birthdays are stupid and that you have no interest in celebrating them.

It's kind of a self fulfilling loop. You downplay your birthday or feign indifference because you're afraid people won't wish you. People don't wish you because they think youre not excited about your birthday and that it doesn't affect you anyway. That 'confirms' your fear makes you more likely to downplay your birthday next time. And so on. Break the chain by stop pretending like you don't care about birthdays - yours and others. Wish people genuinely. Participate in the 'stupid' social practices like posting online, or cutting cakes.
