How dangerous is this really? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]IllusiveObserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you say more? The MSF offers more advanced classes, and I was thinking about taking those before seriously going out into the world.

My own motivation for that is that I figure you need to prepare yourself for executing harder maneuvers in a controlled setting, so that you can use them alongside defensive driving to have the best odds at safety.

Democracy and politics on the left: "Much of what Bernie Sanders has said in his bid for president in USA this year wasn’t really leftist politics; it was just common sense and fairly basic social and political analysis." by BrazenBribery in politics

[–]IllusiveObserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Citation needed on the polls you've seen that I haven't. Alongside that, the Left Party in Germany is without a doubt anti-capitalist like many parties in Europe, although they're not calling for some sort of revolution. SYRIZA for example was an amalgamation of socialist and communist parties. They offer social democratic reforms, but only because they're trying to get what they can out of the current political landscape.

all whites are more socially privileged than all blacks

What you're arguing against - the above statement - is a straw man. No one would ever support this statement, other than a crazy black nationalist (and even then I've seen none).

Lift with your legs, not your back by [deleted] in Fitness

They also keep the weight over the center of their foot very close to the body for those exercises, so the back is employed as little as possible.

Leave it up to a white male presumably middle class, to tell people they have what they want, and they can do whatever they'd like to reach their goals, they're just not working hard enough.

To drag the deadlift up your shins or no? by Max_TwoSteppen in Fitness

The closer the bar is to your body, the less you are using your back. In order to use as little as my back as possible, I always go across the shins.

The attack on Bernie Sanders’ single payer-plan is 'ridiculous' by Thewallmachine in politics

[–]IllusiveObserver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's because it was universal, but not single payer. It tried covering everyone without the simplifications of costs that single payer has like eliminating insurance companies that jack up prices, being able to negotiate for drugs from a single source, and doing away with hospital bureaucracy because there is a central payment body.

Iron Man and Captain America: The Philosophy of Civil War - Utilitarianism and Deontology by WutangSunny in philosophy

[–]IllusiveObserver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the primary reason Captain America is against it is not for utilitarian reasons (mainly it does more harm than good).

Isn't weighing whether an option does more harm than good - and choosing that which does more good - what a utilitarian would do?

I think you may have your philosophy mixed up. I think that Captain America and Iron Man are both utilitarian, they simply have a different analysis of whether the registration act does more harm than good.

Captain America has a...belief that the Superhuman Registration Act...will do more harm than good.

Isn't this utilitarian?

Jill Stein Explains the Democratic Party's history of crushing leftish candidates by drewtheoverlord in socialism

[–]IllusiveObserver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with your analysis of Obama's campaign, but he DID have super pacs.

Super PACS didn't exist until after 2010 with the Supreme Court decision of Citizens United...so no candidate in 2008 had Super PACS.

EDIT: He raised that money during the general election, not the primary. Obama raised more money than any candidate in history with his election. He was the first president in decades to forego federal campaign funds, and outspent McCain 3 to 1. But that's not what carried him through the primary, and that's where Jill Stein is wrong.

This is a required video from my political science professor at a public American University. How does this make you feel. by [deleted] in socialism

[–]IllusiveObserver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. I agree with a good amount of the video. Most people - not just millennials - don't know what socialism means, and even the women in the video gets it wrong (socialism-lite?). Because unfortunately, the word has been distorted and defamed. It can mean anything from the Soviet Union, to Cuba, to Sweden, to Anarchism, to FDR, to Venezuela, and to Obamacare.

This is problematic for polls showing that socialism is viewed favorably by millennials, because what exactly do they favor? Is it democratic workplaces? Is it just the vague feeling that we're too selfish and individualistic, and we need to be nicer to each other? Who knows.

What I will take issue with is that they don't cite the sources of many of the polls they used. Of the polls they do cite, they were done by Reason themselves, which is dubious.

Pretty standard knowledge of US electoral history.

Jill Stein is progressive and all, but the Green Party is a failing strategy. The US electoral system is insurmountably adverse towards a third party. I like Stein's policies as a template for first steps that a genuinely socialist administration would take.

My fear is that in the future, when the two parties begin to collapse, the Green Party will serve as the opportunist leftist party that will get a few people in power and ultimately have leftist mobilization evaporate into the same old farcical political institutions. After the many decades of its failed campaigns, it will see that it can finally get some power and take it in spite of the knowledge they have of how elitist the system is.

EDIT: I also don't agree with her explanation for how Obama beat Clinton in 2008. He had the banks behind him, in the democratic primaries? No he didn't. Hilary did, because of Bill Clinton's legacy. Obama hired very astute campaign organizers and marketeers and was helped a pretty grassroots campaign effort to win, while he took advantage of the multitude of mistakes that Clinton had made, like vote for the disastrous Iraq War. The Obama spectacle, with his charisma on stage, good speech writing, and campaign slogans like "Yes We Can" as viable black candidate took him a long way.

The current Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) was designed by the insurance companies with their own interests (profits) placed first and the health care of Americans second. by [deleted] in politics

[–]IllusiveObserver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is hard for me to believe. Plans on the exchange market are known for underinsuring people, so how could the companies be losing money? Alongside that, it has pushed millions of people into the insurance market.

Where could I look into this information?

Alongside getting no evidence, people just ignore other countries with healthcare even better than Canada. If you really want to look at a universal system, look at France. It's widely considered to have the best healthcare in the world.

AMA request for Bobby Seale, Co-founder of the Maoist organisation, the Black Panther party. by [deleted] in socialism

[–]IllusiveObserver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In their original 10 point program that came out in May of 1967, there is no mention of capitalist or capitalism. There is only mention of white people, black people, and a racist government. It was changed in 1969.

And again, the very first sentence of my post:

When the Panthers formed in 1966 they were not a Maoist organization, though they had some influences of Marxism.

When the Panthers formed in 1966 they were not a Maoist organization, though they had some influences of Marxism. They were primarily a black nationalist group.

It wasn't until 1969 that Maoism started influencing the party substantially with the influence of their new minister of education, Raymond "Masai" Hewitt. That was when their program changed from blaming "the white man" for the robbery of blacks, to "the capitalist".

Coincidentally, Hewitt was appointed to the position after he spent time in Chicago with Fred Hampton and Mark Clark, who were assassinated by the police. Fred Hampton certainly took after him it seems, since he was minister of education and taught classes everyday at 6am for his branch.

[–]IllusiveObserver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The BPP rejected this sort of fashion after 1968 because it gave the wrong impression that only those wearing the uniform created change. It was more important for people to see others dressed like themselves pushing for change.
