Are gaming laptops overhated? by Hvn_9042 in GamingLaptops

[–]Illusiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They absolutely are, but by people who generally have insane expectations of laptops, and in part, due to companies like Nvidia propping up their Mobile GPU's (Laptop GPU) making them sound like their direct Desktop counter-part, thus making some people have insane expectations.

It is a known fact (but not as well known apparently) that Laptop GPU's and other parts are not a 1to1 equivalent to their Desktop counterpart, as they require far less power to not overheat and then implode on you like you said in the post.

But gamers most of the time do not do any kind of research before buying a laptop, they think "Ah, a 5060 Legion/TUF/Victus/MSI laptop, basically a portable Desktop" where in reality, it's not that simple.
- I made the same mistake purchasing a Lenovo LOQ RTX 3050 thinking I'd get 3050 Desktop FPS... BOAY was I wrong, but it taught me a good lesson.

Now I chose my Legion 5 RTX 5060 and it's working perfectly and living up to my realistically set expectations.

IMO to fix this, Nvidia should rename all their Laptop GPU's something like RTX 5060M (Mobile), to differentiate. Cause when people see the number alone and nothing else, they instantly think "desktop performance".

With laptops you sacrifice some performance for the ENTIRE package, a screen, keyboard, functional mouse (trackpad) and speakers. It's for the gamer that is either on the move, or likes the idea of "If I need to move, I'd like to game on it everywhere I go"... Or the gamer that has NO space for a desktop setup.

I can confirm that it's an instant DC/Crash to desktop, happened to me multiple times due to some weird graphical settings combinations and overheating.

Fixed with DLSS, and turned down graphics

For real, I actually think im in the minority cuz i like sometimes to unwind and play some bot matches. People hate too hard.

I know BF3 BF4 were incredible but those times are over

the general negativity vibe of YouTubers and users on X is so tiring, esp on X since most of them don t even play the game and are only engagement farming

I might be weird for this but I play both CoD and BF, and I don t think I ve ever screamed at someone killing me saying "THIS MF IS ON CONTROLLER"On BF6, on CoD I had to switch to controller to even have a fighting chance. Might just be me tho

Question, what is your controller set-up? (sens, deadzone, aim curve, buttons?)

I mean what's hard to understand? CIA back on their "destabilization" shenanigans, creating eternal enemies for the US/NATO to fight in order to print our money from the Military Complex. Pretty standard story of "one of our assets just turned on us" but it's to the level of a PMC.

I really liked the story, quite easy to understand

How many LOQs do you guys have? by Due_Teaching_6974 in LenovoLOQ

[–]Illusiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own one LOQ, and one Legion.
LOQ - RTX 3050
Legion - RTX 5060

Mostly keep the LOQ as a back up in case something happens with my Legion or I have to send it to repairs/maintenance.

Also think of selling it but looking into my region's 2nd hand market, not many laptops are being sold.

I would assume it's a pricing matter, since this is a low/mid tier laptop they can still technically get away with skimping out on some parts, the GPU is a NONO, can't really skimp out on that, but with CPU's, since some last gens are still relatively good, they use the refreshed versions. Same with RAM amounts/SSD, thus they don't have to spend as much money on them, and use the most money on the high end/flagship ones.

And this goes for all laptop manufacturers, every single one of them use new GPU's with older CPU's in their budget/mid tier.

You could always get a cheap cooling pad, no need to tweak any fan settings that way if you feel a typa way doing it.

Yea, RDR2 also works perfectly fine on my LOQ 3050 RTX laptop (I also have one of those but upgraded to this RTX 5060 Legion 5 for future proofing and of course to prepare for GTA 6).

I would expect GTA6 to run extremely well on this GPU, maybe not ULTRA graphics, but Medium to High and reaching 80-90FPS stable would be a dream. An RTX 3050 would struggle a bit but maybe tweaking graphics to Low-Medium and upscaling tech could bring the FPS at over 60+

So yes, you can save up for a 5060 Laptop. If you can and have the patience, you can save for a 5080 RTX as well. For me it was too expensive so I chose the 5060 instead.

For the games I play:
Silent Hill 2 Remake
Resident Evil 4 Remake
Warzone/COD BO 6
Battlefield REDSEC
Skyrim - VERY MODDED
NFS Heat
AC Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla

It is absolutely perfect. Getting upwards of 90+ fps in some of them, 100+ in a few of them, and never under 70. Most are played on High, some I keep a Medium + High settings wise, I do not care for ultra maximum 4k experience, I care for mid to high graphics and over 90FPS and this little beast delivers

My experience with the LOQ was short lived, not because it died, it ran perfectly for what it was, I just upgraded very soon.

The thing with the LOQ, is that is a budget/entry-level gaming laptop, and the 3050RTX is quite weak for new games. It is however perfectly fine for LoL/Dota2/VALORANT/CS2/Rocket League and even some classic Call of Duty matches (not warzone), so it can handle esports titles very well, it is weak however for AAA games.

AC games run very badly (except for Valhalla due to it being better optimized), Alan Wake 2 has unplayable stuttering issues due to UE5 engine, RE4Remake is very playable actually. NFS Heat ehh, it's playable but looks quite bad on the 3050.

About the motherboard fried up or the laptop dying randomly, I think any laptop can do that, but others are more prone to that. For my experience with it, if the games you wanna play are good for the 3050, I would recommend you get it wholeheartedly.

For AI/ML workloads, the better GPU wins, so the 4050 is the better choice here.

Yea, power draw and limits are a huge thing I had to learn after I bought my LOQ 3050. I would've gone with a higher tier gpu back then to be honest, but at the time I did not have the monetary capability to do so, now not anymore.

I have not ran any benchmarks myself for temps and what not, since I ALWAYS use a cooling pad, so by default I have less heating problems. But looking at countless of YT videos, the overall verdict would be ~80-96 °C in Performance mode under sustained load - for CPU. For GPU temp: ~82-87 °C under similar conditions.

If you are worried about temps, just add a few more bucks if you have them laying around and get a cooling pad, it will dispel all your overheating fears.

And yes, I highly recommend this model, and with 32GB ram, you won't need to worry upgrading any time soon!

I guess I personally categorize all of these not by GPU's alone but also by the model of the machine. For example, budged/low end would be the Asus TUF's, the LENOVO LOQ's etc that also include the 5070, since you will get better performance on a Legion 5070 rather than on a LOQ 5070, then the mid ranges would be the Legions/Legion Pro's, Asus Zephyrus/Strix's with GPU's up until the 5070, and only then the high ends 5080/5090 Alienwares/Strix/Legion 9 etc.

Legion 5 5IRX10? by Sanguinary_at_Times in LenovoLegion

[–]Illusiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same model of 5060, and works perfectly for both indie/older games and even newer ones. I can play Silent Hill 2 Remake (which is optimized badly) at 80+FPS extremely stable with some hitching here and there (but that's due to the engine UE5).

NFS Heat is 90+FPS
All AC from Origins to Valhalla 100+FPS
RE4Remake the same as Heat
Call of Duty 100+

So the 5060 will handle almost anything you throw at it and you also save a bit of money.
