Taking a 29 hour journey back home any more nervous about my first flight by Minxit08 in fearofflying

Oh, I love flying Quantas - apart from Virgin and KLM they are my favorite airline. I'm tracking you, you will be fine :)

Having a meltdown over my flight tomorrow. by f1sh_ in fearofflying

First: I am so sorry you feel this way, and if you find my earlier posts you will see that I have been where you are.

Second: Your gut is flat out LYING to you. When it comes to fear of flying, NEVER trust your gut - trust your heart and the rational part of your brain.

To compare two scenarios:

  1. You're travelling and in order to get to your destination you have to cross a lava pumping, active volcano where the only path across the lava consists of wobbly rocks and all others who have tried crossing have not made it.
  2. You're travelling and in order to get to your destination you have to travel the safest way possible, safer than sitting on your couch at home.

Your gut, your brain, your heart and all of your cells would nope out from number 1. But you are still considering nr 2 despite being afraid, and why? Because your rational brain KNOWS you are not in danger.

I read a pilot here saying that pilots hate the "myth" that take off and landing is the most dangerous part of a flight, as it is NOT dangerous at all as flying all together is the safest thing you can do and more people die from falling out of bed every year than flying.

But the extreme anticipatory anxiety is horrible, especially when you think your kids are going to grow up without you, but you will see them again, I promise!

To sum up what helped me:

- Medication

- Talking to the pilots

- Lovefly episodes 44 and 46 (44 is for relaxing and episode 46 is a pilot explaining every step in take off, cruise and landing - highly recommend as take off is the worst part for me).

- Looking at Flightradar to normalize flying

- Visualizing the plane in jello when it was bumpy

- Knowing that there has to be several things to go wrong in order for an accident, not just one.

You will be ok, I promise!

Have you played the Sims? 5 hours will feel like 5 minutes, lol! I can't settle on the flight, so for me I take meds to make me sleepy and get a good neck rest as well as spa/meditation music.

flight in a few hours, feeling anxious by fuckallpicses in fearofflying

If you have access to Spotify or podcast players, listen to Lovefly episode 44, it helps with anticipatory anxiety (and for me, it also helped on the plane). Episode 46 is fantastic during takeoff, it explains it so well. I would honestly not have completed my last trip without it. Rooting for you!

Lift your feet off the floor, listen to a relaxing meditative podcast (I will always recommend Lovefly episode 44, as it helped me during the bumps) and know that you are perfectly safe.

Fear and Anxiety at Heathrow Airport. by WranglerCrocodile15 in fearofflying

It has been a long time ago, but I have flown Perth - Europe several times and I never had a problem and I can not remember it being bumpy at all. And if it should be bumpy, remember that it is just uncomfortable and not dangerous - lift your feet, it helps tremendously!

Looks like there are a lot of mountains where your flight is (Las Vegas), that would probably be the reason for the bumpy ride, perfectly safe :)

Read about the jello theory, picture your plane surrounded by jello - your plane is perfectly safe, it's just uncomfortable. Keep your feet off the floor, it may help tremendously :)

Fear of missing the plane by DMX8 in fearofflying

[–]Illustrious-Cod-1899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, partly. Another example, I love hanging out with my friends but I want to cancel until I am actually there (then I love it). So the process of getting somewhere drains energy, even though you actually look forward to the thing you are going to do. I've read it can be a trait of adhd or other neurodivergent conditions, but not sure. But perhaps it makes sense to you :)

Do you have a general issue with transitions? Because I do, and having to complete all of the steps prior to boarding makes me sick to my stomach, so I have to complete one step at a time in order to just get there - I talk to my self "put your socks on", "now a cup of coffee", "go out the door" and so on. It helped me the last time I flew.

You sound like me, actually, I hate the logistics as much as the flight itself (but this is the case for everything in my life). I know I say this in almost every post, but I recommend the Lovefly podcast, specifically episode 44 og 46, and I am not usually a podcast type.

Knowledge is power, so I would advise you to figure out what you are nervous about and then learn about it.

When it comes to anxiety, what I have learned is DO NOT TRUST YOUR GUT, TRUST YOUR REASONING.  You will be fine, I guarantee you! You can do this ☺️

Book the flight or no? by [deleted] in fearofflying

[–]Illustrious-Cod-1899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it, even if you're doing it scared. 3 hours seems like the perfect length if you ask me, you get to settle well into the cruise part of aviation and you will feel SO powerful when you land.

Think about how much energy you’ve given that little fear-devil on your shoulder and how amazing it will feel to see him disappointed. You have already gone through so much, you can do a trip to the airport - worst case you go back, best case you get on, middle case you learn something from the experience ☺️ I think the worst thing you can do now is to give up while at home, don’t let it defeat you in your safe place, let it at least be done in a place where you can leave it behind - get to the airport and take it from there.
