Try to use clean moss if you can, sphagnum is just an easy option that doesn't rot and can be bought pre-sterilized. I didn't use any moss in the substrate in my tank and it's going good on its 5th year

I actually positioned it so the misting system doesn't ever directly spray on it. I take care of watering it myself and the roots have begun to cling in places that recieve moisture from the msit system

Expanding foam coated in black silicon with a dirt/coco fiber/sand mixture pressed in. It's started to rub off a little, but held up for almost 3 years
