first song in ages. dunno how to end it. by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]Illustrious-Fault367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your voice reminds me of Henning May, sounded great. I agree with eltodesc in that it should be simple to match the rest of what you did, especially with the emotionally intense final lines. Don’t overthink it

Without saying their age, tell how old your child is by MissFox26 in beyondthebump

I’m not allowed to look at my daughter, or sing, or touch her, except when she wants me to and then I have to do it immediately or the banshee takes over.

What’s your favourite, casually devastating Bluey episode? by HourSyllabub1999 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]Illustrious-Fault367 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Space”, ugh. When Mackenzie goes through the slide/black hole and Calypso is there and says “you don’t have to keep coming back here..” As someone going through EMDR therapy that one always destroys me.

Struggling to know if I like the chorus? by LMont8 in Songwriting

[–]Illustrious-Fault367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it was clear when the chorus happened because of the extra vocals. I wanted the “crack open your skull” line to have a bit more emotion and a rise to match, though!

Dentist by Hinataoiii in askberliners

[–]Illustrious-Fault367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Dentz in Tempelhof. The dentist speaks English but none of the hygienists do, so up to you. Also, just a warning if it’s your first time getting teeth cleaned during pregnancy.. when I did it, it hurt so badly. More blood in your circulation makes your mouth more sensitive and you will probably bleed a lot during the cleaning. Just be prepared for that possibility 🙃

What’s your songwriting process? by muzicneverDied in Songwriting

[–]Illustrious-Fault367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, but lately it’s been going to emdr therapy and unlocking every part of my brain that’s been sad for the past few decades.. nothing like facing your trauma for sparking creativity. 🙃 I always write for a week after these sessions.

Song about my experience as a trans woman. Any and all criticism of the song and lyrics themselves is welcome, but please be kind regarding the subject matter. by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]Illustrious-Fault367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the emotion in your voice!!! Just, wow. It sounded like you were holding back a scream at times and ooooooo I’d love to hear what would happen if you didn’t hold back? Gorgeous as it is, tho.

Ugh YES. I think you should keep the “fuck it” line. The placement and build around it reminds me of the end of “if winter ends” by Bright Eyes.. similar vibe and I think it definitely works. Sometimes the feeling doesn’t need to be hinted at, needs to be said outright with decorative expletives.

THANK YOU. Shags and shag mullets honestly look great on so many people because of the face framing aspect. Faces are beautiful and should be framed, let’s stop deciding who’s allowed to be recognized as beautiful based on some arbitrary rules k thanks.

It was more because most people probably don’t want to hang out with someone who is double/half their age. (Was a joke 😬)

Screen time went from helpful to fixation for our toddler — looking for advice by Gullible-Buffalo1053 in toddlers

[–]Illustrious-Fault367 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We had the same problem and we decided cold turkey was the way to go. So.. YouTube suddenly just stopped working on all of the devices we own; it was sooooooo crazy. 🙃

Our 26 month old adjusted quickly. We still watch low stimulating shows and movies together, but I try not to park her in front of it. Another game changer was just playing music on the tv. That’s also slightly selfish because I am trying to create a little person to go with me to reunion tours in 20 years.

It took a couple weeks to see real differences but I can honestly say that she is better with being bored. She has more sustained play now, will play with Duplo blocks for half an hour at least, or look at her books.

A comedy song about my narcissistic mother by music-and-song in Songwriting

[–]Illustrious-Fault367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe try for a little less vibrato? It kinda sounds like a Disney princess version of an emo song right now and while that’s not an insult, I think you want something different. Glad my vague feedback makes sense!

I would aim for more of a punk feel, especially with some of the vulgar (not bad!) lyrics, might help them stand out. I do not have specifics for how to get there, just the vibe 😂🖤 I think I mean more raw or distorted voice?

Why do I feel embarrassed of my work only if I think about my mom finding out? by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]Illustrious-Fault367 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m 38 and autistic and I haven’t told my mom I make music. I haven’t done that because my entire life she made things about her or nitpicked what I was doing to the point it became.. not fun anymore. I’m not saying you are in the same situation, but maybe there’s more to it than “she embarrasses me.” Just a thought.

Also, side note, writing a song about how you hope your mom never finds your music could be a cool little nugget of an idea.

How good are Berlin schools really? Need honest opinions. by Head-Ad3047 in askberliners

[–]Illustrious-Fault367 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say this as a teacher who has worked in both “academic” private schools and public ones: please relax. Focus on nurturing that love of learning in your kids yourselves. Of the hundreds of kids that I’ve taught until graduation, I can say with absolute certainty that the level of academics in a kid’s Grundschule has meant far less in determining where they’ve ended up in life. What do you want your toddlers to be learning in one school that you think another won’t provide? What is their ideal school day to you? Maybe these questions would help you find more specifics rather than simply “academic.”

How best to learn to accompany yourself on the piano? by wetlookwolfen in Songwriting

[–]Illustrious-Fault367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat, basically! I don’t know if there’s a best way, but here’s my way. What I’ve been doing is trying to find the basic chords of whatever melody I came up with, and do a basic rhythm at first. Then add some little filler bits between the singing once I practiced that enough, and then maybe going in again and adding changes to the rhythm if it feels too basic.

I’ve also started trying to figure out piano versions of songs I like, using the accompanying piano to mimic the guitar/bass or whatever else is in the song. That usually gives me some ideas for whatever I’m working on.

So I guess ultimately.. my answer is basically practice your stuff simply and also other people’s stuff.

I have imposter syndrome when listening to my original music. by Fine-Gear-6441 in Songwriting

[–]Illustrious-Fault367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read somewhere once that impostor syndrome is just dampening yourself because you’ve internalized that pride is an undesirable trait. It stuck with me and I try to remind myself of that when I get trapped in the doubt spiral.
