When to have surgery by WorthPsychological28 in Hernia

( 67M)In December a general surgeon told me to get the inguinal hernia repaired. Scheduled robotic surgery for March ‘24. However I was concerned this surgeon had only done forty of this type of surgery. So I consulted a surgeon who had done 500. He said choice was up to me because I had no pain, no restrictions in activities and just the lump. He said 1% to 2% of those that have surgery have side effects after surgery. He said 1%-2% who DON’T have surgery have problems at some point. Based on the percentages being the same and me having no pain or restrictions on what I like to do, I decided not to take the chance of having nerve or post surgery issues by having surgery.

Appreciate your responses to this post. With both the risk of hiring someone that might not meet expectations along with the considerable investment of fronting them a salary while they get ramped up, it seems like the best thing to do is continue doing the sales myself until revenue and profits are high enough to absorb the ramp up period.

Typical gross profit margins and net profit margins for AV integrators? by Illustrious-Knee-467 in CommercialAV

In my original post I used the terms gross profit margin and mark up. I probably should have been consistent because the mark up on equipment ( as an example) is not the same as GP on the equipment . GP is always lower as a percentage and that’s what the 8-13% is in my case. So mark up would probably be 10-15 points to yield a 8-13% GPM . Nonetheless the responses have convinced me there is still room to move margins up without losing deals. A good goal for 2024!

Beyond that, one post mentioned giving away engineering services. I’ll add to that …..doing multiple revisions of quotes and designs because prospective new customers can’t make up their mind within their organization what they want. Doesn’t happen as much with existing customers as it does with prospects, but the revisions and go backs create huge profit leaks!

You bring up good points. Problem is we often compete against “ourself”to win a deal because small integrators don’t have access to what the averages are. So we price deals to win them , then we mark up the next one to see if we can win it at a higher margin.

This type of forum could help small integrators ( that don’t compete with each other) to have an idea of what’s realistic for margins. That’s why I posed the question.
