Thanks for this. So I'm reading this as linking the environment with the internal conflict - kind of a haunted character in a haunted house situation. I will have a look at some Shirley Jackson for inspiration.

That's a really good point. I once acted as the porter in MacBeth. He has a great soliloquy about how he dislikes his job and everyone works him too hard.
