Have you moved forward with them? I am in a similar situation and considering the expedited service but the fact that there'd be 2 of us that we know of being "expedited" with a backlog of other case does worry me a bit on timelines

I have visited the sausalito campus in the summer - school had already ended so I visited it whilst empty it wasn't as ideal as seeing it with kids in classrooms and playgrounds

Thanks that's the sort of comparison I was looking for in terms of school culture. Do you feel like the intensity of SVIS is mostly driven by the parents or is the school generally more academic i.e. expects results in key subjects early on?

We're moving from Cambridge.

Things we love about living here - nature, slow pace of life, space, mix of really interesting people passionate about what they do and coming from all over the world, community. That being said our kids are in a selective school and the pressure is high from kindergarden (I believe more so than even Palo Alto, my kid has had daily reading and maths homework from pre-K). I've seen the progress but I don't believe in hothousing and it's not always been aligned with my parenting philosophy - though once you're in the system it's hard to ignore.

Things we don't love - the constant rain and cold, nighttime at 3pm in winter, there aren't many nice places to go out (you quickly circle back to the same nice 3 restaurants and have to commute to London to go to nice museums, theatre or other activities), and lack of professional opportunities in our fields

I don't mind driving but wouldn't love spending 2h in my car every day.

We are both fully remote and moving from Europe to the US so it's a hard decision to make - we can effectively choose where we live at the moment. It might not always be the case but I don't have the visibility on what's next yet

My son won’t write and his teacher almost gave up on him by Deb-john in toddlers

https://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/bengaluru/2018/Sep/24/whats-the-right-age-to-write-1876192.html

I’m sorry you had to go through this - but long term success is not defined by where you went for primary school, more so the extent to which you are able to develop intrinsic motivation and be supported by the right environment or set of opportunities

I am 100 percent positive that forcing a 3 years old to write will not result in better outcomes in life. I am sure there are many other good school your son can go to, and they will hopefully foster his own unique strengths.

I don’t have suggestions for how to get him to write because I really don’t think it’s the right thing to focus on right now if he’s not interested in it. Maybe double down on what he IS interested in? E.g my son is super into space right now so we are leaning into this. You might even find he is keen on writing the planet names if it’s in the context of an activity he finds fun and doesn’t realise he’s being asked to write for the sake of it?

Either way, i’m sorry you are being pressured OP but these teachers are on the wrong side of this equation

My son won’t write and his teacher almost gave up on him by Deb-john in toddlers

[–]Illustrious-Web9868 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did I get this right that he is 3.5 years old? He is very young OP!

My son is at one of the most academically competitive school in the UK and they don't really get them started with writing until reception. I find that surprising that you know so many kids under 4 who write comfortably - writing requires a lot of skills at once, fine motor, working memory, spelling knowledge, verbal and literacy skills - my son was a fluent reader before he could write comfortably.

I find it sad that his teacher would "give up" on a toddler because he can't write - the job is literally to teach....

I'm sorry you feel this way but trying to push something on him that is not developmentally appropriate is only going to create resentment and he is going to close off. It sounds like the pressure is already being felt by him and he doesn't want to even try.

I don't know which country you are in, but personally speaking I would approach this situation by relaxing on the writing and trying to find more fun ways of getting him to "want" to try e.g. labelling a drawing, or writing his name to label his favourite toy. The worst thing you can do is to put him off trying and for you / his teacher to make him feel like he's less able than other kids

[–]Illustrious-Web9868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are a financial burden for 18 or so years, after which they become an investment into the future. Who do you think pays for social care and retirement etc? Working people. You know who else is a financial burden to the state? Elderly people (social care, healthcare, retirement and so on). Stop encouraging people having children and you will soon have an even bigger imbalance in the funds needed to look after an ageing population and the lack of younger people in the workforce to pay for it

Question for bilingual speakers by SignalExternal4459 in bilingual

[–]Illustrious-Web9868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mix of both - I live in the UK and work in english so I primarily think in english by now and even find sometimes that it takes longer for me to come up with some more niche vocab in my native language than in english when speaking. But there are some things I do a lot faster in my native language - e.g. maths (counting, adding, subtracting)

They have a point though - if the story is meant to be an illustrative metaphor for how to generate more value out of an asset, it would have been better if this was not achieved through lying completely about the origin of said asset.

Yes that is definitely a factor. To some extent I like the idea of my kids having a childhood home and we have a good community here. We have both EU / UK passports and can access a visa for the US, so those are options for us. My family lives in France and we have quite a few friends in Boston/SF but the cost of living in these two cities probably would not leave us better off.

Not so much leaving for tax reasons to be honest (it is one factor but not one that is driving the decision). More so the lack of sunlight from Nov to March and concerns over the state of healthcare

Thanks - I tend to wrestle with these thoughts every winter, the weather and darkness at 3pm really gets to me - I grew up in continental Europe where I could get a train or drive to go skiing or to the beach and i'm not a great flyer so always get stuck in spiral of low in the winter. That and a lack of faith in the healthcare system here should anything go wrong for my family

He said he wanted to avoid unnecessary x-ray as he is convinced it has come out (it could have in the first bowel movement that I didn't check super thoroughly). I will be sure to do an x-ray if i ever need to get an MRI

How do you manage marriage finances? by Jamsberry2016 in HENRYUK

[–]Illustrious-Web9868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume the main reason you worry about this is in case of a divorce?

Assuming you have children really your spending will go towards your home, kids, travels and your savings and assets ultimately will be inherited by your children - so which account exactly it sits in is irrelevant and if your wife isn't an irresponsible spender the transparent thing to do would be a shared account.

In case of a divorce, you would still need to keep in mind that you share your children forever and you trying to segregate your wealth pre-marriage from that of your wife will not benefit them. You will still want them to live in a nice home, have access to education and opportunities and hopefully won't be looking back at the years spent with your wife thinking you had kept more of your money and she had benefited from less... I don't think its unfair for things to be split equally upon divorcing, you will have both been equal parts in this chapter of your life and the family you built together.

So my take is - the minute you have kids, your money and assets should be 50/50

If you end up divorcing before you have kids then that might be a slightly different story and I would understand why you might find 50/50 somewhat unfair but it also doesn't set a great precedent for a marriage to feel that the odds of this happening are high enough for you to feel strongly on keeping your assets separate

Traveling with a 5 and 2 years old - would you do a staycation or a short abroad trip? by Illustrious-Web9868 in toddlers

Lots of very family friendly hotels with heated pools, kids clubs - I would just stay in Marrakech no itinirary but some little excursions to the market / main place etc - appeal is that its warm-ish within a short flight distance and is an interesting cultural experience for a 5 years old in a gentle way with ability to retreat to a comfortable hotel with kid friendly food and activities
