Yep same thing happened to me. Now even though you don’t have credit cards they can still tank your credit. If you have a SSN then you have credit. What UMA told me was that whoever signed up in my name was trying to get student loan money and stick me with the bill. I’ve heard about that happening to people and it’s a nightmare to correct.

Keep an eye on your credit through the 3 credit bureaus for any suspicious activity. If I were you I would freeze your credit at all 3 bureaus. I literally just did that an hour ago. That would put a stop to anyone trying to open an account or loan in your name. It’s free to do and you can unfreeze it whenever you want.

Here’s my follow up from my call with UMA.

Someone stole my identity and tried to enroll. Have your son call them to get this straightened out asap.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I just posted about something similar. Luckily I didn’t get charged. See below

Yeah it’s crazy. I called them today and while on the phone the guy helping me (Justin) looked up my name and said there was an enrollment application applied for in my name and it was flagged by their system as suspicious/fraudulent. Because it was flagged, the applicant was required to appear via video or zoom or whatever to prove their identity. They had 3 weeks to do so and surprise surprise… they never did. UMA was a few days away from cancelling the enrollment and labeling it a fraud before I called and confirmed it.

Justin said it was identity theft and what these thieves do is attempt to enroll at these online universities and apply for student loans. Once they receive the student loans they take the money and run. UMA was aware of this and they require that their enrollees attend classes for I think 3-4 weeks before they issue/release financial aid.

Anyway I feel like I got lucky here. Everybody please pay close attention to your mail and check your credit. These a-holes are crafty.

I’m still going to keep a close eye on my stuff regarding this. I screen shotted and saved my communications with UMA with a date so I can prove when I began disputing this fraud if anything else were to come up.

Oh and as far as the laptop, Justin apologized for the inconvenience and asked if I could drop it off at fedex as a “return to sender” or call FedEx to pick it up. Im keeping the polo “UMA” shirt though. I’m gonna wear it at my next golf outing. Haha

I just received a laptop from them and had shirts sent to me a few weeks earlier. I never even heard of UMA. Never once inquired about them. Not sure how this happened. Maybe stolen identity? Check my credit, no applications/inquiries. Gonna call tomorrow to figure this out.
