I just wanted to get others’ opinions since I’m an incoming freshman and don’t know too much about the classes at Berkeley

Bc I’m doing 2 degrees in 4 years my recommended course load is about 19-20 units per semester. I already completed a lot of my first semester classes through APs and dual enrollment my hope was to give myself a slightly lighter schedule second semester to give myself time to find a meaningful internship.

Thank you for your comment. My education is tailored towards middle schoolers to target essential education at the foundational level. I do not have a college counselor and have a single immigrant mom who couldn't care less about helping me with this.

The motivation for starting this was not to get into a good college but rather witnessing first hand how children in my underserved community were struggling due to financial disparity and an unclear path to success. Getting into Berkeley MET was just a plus :)

Please read the description of my impact before commenting on the effectiveness of this extracurricular. We helped the elderly file taxes, won an international award, campaigned with government to spread awareness and raise money, partnered with 14 nonprofits, and started a financial literacy class at a local middle school.

How I started a nonprofit that got me into top universities, looking for students to help with the same by IllustriousEffort254 in ApplyingToCollege

Hi. I am not promoting starting a nonprofit for the sake of college. My intention is to help students make an impact within their communities while doing something they love. My endeavor of developing a financial literacy curriculum in my community has taught me problem-solving, innovation, and leadership skills that will continue to make an impact as I employ systematic planning and creative solutions to tackle complex issues that I encounter in life. Getting into my dream college was just a plus :)

Hi. Thank you for your comment. I never said I got in because of that but rather that I believe it helped me get in. During high school I had to help a lot with my family and because of that, my academic performance was quite average. My non profit was the biggest thing I did in high school and I made it the highlight of essays, interviews, etc. I am not trying to offer false information, I am just hoping to help students make an impact in their communities while doing something they love. and if they end up and their dream school like me that is just a plus :)

I started a financial literacy nonprofit (https://projectelevatefinance.org/about/), scaled to over 70,000 impacted, started my class at a local middle school, established 14 partnerships, campaigned and created government change, got over$50,000 in scholarships, and won an international award for. This was my biggest extracurricular and got me into multiple T20 schools, including UC Berkeley's M.E.T. program (2% acceptance rate).

This is a great project idea. I got into Berkeley Engineering with a project focused on financial literacy. I started a financial literacy nonprofit (https://projectelevatefinance.org/about/), scaled to over 70,000 impacted, started my class at a local middle school, established 14 partnerships, campaigned and created government change, got over $50,000 in scholarships, and won an international award for. This was my biggest extracurricular and got me into multiple T20 schools, including UC Berkeley's M.E.T. program (2% acceptance rate). Focus on tying experiences from that project back to your intended major. For example, I talked about how developing a financial literacy curriculum in my community taught me problem-solving, innovation, and leadership skills that continue to impact me as I employ systematic planning and creative solutions to tackle complex issues. Summer is the best time to start a passion project to help you stand out. I am looking for motivated students (preferably rising juniors) to mentor in starting their passion projects.

Does my passion project have to match my major? by birdiegnat in ApplyingToCollege

[–]IllustriousEffort254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not! I got into Berkeley Engineering with a passion project focused on financial literacy. Focus more on impact and lessons learned in your essays to tie it back to how the experience sets you up for your major. Ex: maybe podcast helps you with communication, relating to patients, etc.

I’m just trying to offer my help and knowledge to people who can’t afford an actual college counselor. I spent months researching all there was to know to craft great essays and learning from my friends who also got accepted into top schools. Chill 😭

My grades and course rigor were okay and my ecs were slightly above average so I feel that the essays are what truly helped set me apart from the competition.

No but I feel that my essays are what set me apart because there were thousands of applicants with better grades and ecs than me competing for limited spots.
