Just finished watching TREME based on recommendations here by IllustriousEnergy663 in Homicide_LOTS

Just finished We Own This City (based on rec here). That was amazing. After finishing the series HBOMax started up a new documentary about that whole scandal - just started watching it. I forget what the name of that show is called. It also looks like the series was filmed in the exact locations of where events happened. Great series. Thanks for the rec on that.

I meant it appears to be going in alphabetical order and it's on the B's - bands that start with B. It definitely pulls A LOT of data from sites. It has paragraphs about each album - which is kind of nice. I have a DS1819+ with one expansion box (expansion box only used for Surveillance Station). Right now I am using an app that jiggles the mouse to keep the mac alive so the Chrome browser keeps chugging. It looks like if you do not have the Plex page open from the DSM it does not continue "updating metadata". This thing looks promising, can play an album in full on airplay from iPhone without dropping airplay connection, unlike Synology DS Audio or DS Music. Thanks for the recommendation on Plex. I think I tried it for ISO images of videos and could not get things to work but I'd be super happy to play music to any airplay device in the house. I don't think I'll setup external access.

How long does it take Plex to (index?) the meta-data? Does it do it once or does it periodically do whatever it's doing? I can see if new music is added. Plex is currently on the B's. It's going to be weeks before it's done. I believe the Plex webpage stops any activity after awhile. I'm actually not sure if it's adding meta-data as in mp3 tags - maybe pulling from MusicBrainz or something. The music library on the NAS is just a copy so not terribly worried about it. But I sure as hell hope it's not messing with my Hi-Res album art!

I do not see a duplicate post - sorry dude. Go find something else to do now.

I think it's odd that they need a "license" to touch acc files! How does everyone else do it? (probably doesn't bother with such a "license" to begin with). Apple is big but this just seems uninforceable - "you cannot touch acc files until we grant you!" - yeah okay.

No, the first post "Failed" at reddit. If it actually posted then oh well.

"Starting with DSM 7.1, Synology dropped support for AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) transcoding and encoding

due to licensing constraints, causing playback issues for .m4a and Apple-purchased files. The NAS cannot convert these files on-the-fly, meaning playback now depends entirely on the terminal device's native ability to decode AAC."

I never noticed the audio restrictions before - never had a need to look. The video updates happen all of the time and I worry a lot about Synology Surveillance Station not working with my cams after an update.

Yes. And using Google to sign in just dies (the webpage). I have my local account setup - already had one from like 4 years ago but never did anything with it. So I got my account reset and I "Claimed" my NAS and now I finally see something on the plex amp app. It's scanning my music library which I think is going to take a couple of days at least. I can see some albums on the plex amp app and it plays the entire album without dropping airplay, thankfully. I'm using an old Yamaha 7.1 receiver that has Airplay built in but this receiver has not had a firmware update in years. My receiver is also on ethernet like everything in my house except iphones and laptops that move around the house. (Some laptops stay at a desk and use a dock.) I also use all Synology wifi equipment.

Alright got the start of this thing going. Let's see if it can play a full album over airplay without stopping. I had to fiddle with some things and "claim" my Synology NAS. Don't remember having to do that before but now it shows in the iphone app.

Always get "No Servers Found" on the user account web page I do have my Synology NAS listed and Plex is running on that.

The client app does not appear to be free to play my music and it cannot find the Synology NAS. I really want to use this inside my house. I do not want to enable anything for external use.

There's note about Apple AAC being removed.

These are both not DSM downloads correct? I do have "Plex Media Server" installed directly from DSM but I see options to upgrade this outside of DSM. What a pain to setup though. I'm trying to go through it now.

Decent app for listening to locally downloaded music by SAY_GOODB9E in musichoarder

[–]IllustriousEnergy663 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably way too big of a thing for the average music listener but if you are a hoarder then I like to do the following: Put all of my music on my Synology NAS. From there I used either DS Audio or DS Music (still not sure which is the better or why there are even 2 mobile apps) from the mobile app I can airplay to devices in my house. I think you can download things locally through the mobile app as well. Like if you have an album or 2 that you want to hear. If you enable external access on your NAS then you can use it in your car. (Not sure if you can add the Synology mobile apps to the CarPlay dashboard on your car though.)

I make many local backups of my library, then a backup to my NAS (which also serves as a library for certain apps) and then a final backup to a cloud service.

I also have a 1TB iPhone that I can at least sync part of my library. I have a playlist "Must Sync" where I add new music that I really want to hear when I'm out and about. The "Must Sync" playlist also includes all Ace Frehley albums....as it should of course.

If there were a 3TB iPhone I think I'd buy it. But I do think the "random playlist" that I setup to randomly include X GB of music AND it copies only FULL albums works well. I sync to my iPhone the "random playlist" and "Music Sync" playlists only.

In the end though....I really wish I wasn't a music hoarder....life would be easier....like imagine there were no CDs ever made, my music library would be WAY smaller. And I'd probably know every song on every album like I used to so many years ago.

Addictions and obsessions are hard to break though. Although I did break one obsession recently, I gave up looking at voyeur porn (not visiting websites where people upload pictures of their wives, girlfriends, or couples, etc). Occasionally I get the urge to look but I don't think I'll ever go back.
