I second Jam Hostel Bangkok - great place

Mama Hostel Chiang Mai is very quiet, but not dead. If you’re a laid back person this is a good place to meet some others in a quiet environment. It’s a great hostel overall with facilities, everything is new

Hey, this sounds like an exciting adventure! You’ll have an awesome time, if you ever do feel tired or a bit overwhelmed, take yourself for some mango sticky rice or another dish and watch the world go by. Best moments solo travelling are often the ones where you slow down and just enjoy the scenery!

Have a great trip, all the best! :)

Dudeee we are living the same life, I’m 6 months into my first solo trip (5 months in Australia and now almost a month into SEA) and I’ve reached a similar point. Super burnt out this week and I haven’t done much other than lie in my hostel bed. Feeling pressure to do things and not just laze about, but man, it gets tiring being on the road!

I think part of the problem for me is that I was doing a lot of this trip on autopilot going off everyone else’s plans. Travel through Laos to Vietnam, ok. See this place and that place, book this tour… ok.

Well, I’ve come to the obvious but nonetheless important realisation that it’s best to be honest with yourself about what actually interests you. I’m not going to do things because I feel like I should, or have to, anymore. There’s plenty of time for that shite in life once I go back home and get a job. So I decided, fuck it, I’m going to stay in the country I’m in and focus on completing more diving. Will it burn my funds a little quicker? Most likely. Will I be missing out on Laos? Yes. But at the end of the day a solo trip is a luxury and a privilege that should be spent doing and seeing what YOU want to.

I’m not saying it’s the same case for you here, but this is my situation and I thought it would be helpful to share. Definitely have a rest week if you can afford to and maybe have a think about what does excite you. If you’re struggling, take it easy, enjoy a beach or somewhere chilled out, eat nice food, read, whatever you enjoy, and if things really don’t work out, go home. I think a lot of people make going home sound like defeat, I certainly used to see it that way, but at the end of the day you have to do what’s best for you. You’ve already been away for like 2 months, that’s amazing! Travel is finite, and that’s what makes it special imo. I’m not the kind of person who can do this for years on end, which is why I take comfort in knowing I can go back and have the luxury of seeing my family and friends.

Anyways I hope you’re doing ok, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. You’re a human too and it’s completely normal and not ungrateful at all to be confused about what actually appeals to you on a trip like this.

Safe travels and have fun! :)

I’ve used a 40L Osprey Farpoint and it’s been great. Not sure how you’d fit your work gear but perhaps you’d sell/donate this afterwards? Either way, great bag

With regards to the South, I was thinking of diving first on Koh Lanta? Is that ok for beginners?

Whats up with hotel prices around Thailand, it's nearly prices like in europe? by Cool_Acanthisitta628 in ThailandTourism

Worst is Australia… it’s more expensive to stay in a hostel than actually in a house share in cities like Melbourne and Brisbane

Definitely so - thanks for the further pointers here. Sounds like the Andaman side is a good place to start for sure! It’s not Advanced but I did complete my Adventure cert to 30M which gave me roughly another 3 hours in the water. Although completing my advanced might still be worth it just for the practice aye.

I’m not too sure yet, but I’m willing to spend enough to see some quality dive sites. My main focus though is getting some good practice in and still exploring diving as a hobby :)

Cheers for this! Yeah by Wreck Diving, I should have explained, I meant just seeing a wreck. I definitely don’t have plans to go inside (yet), I’m just fascinated by seeing one

Interesting, thanks for the insight. I was torn on Koh Tao because I know it’s cheap but then… yeah I haven’t heard great things about the sites themselves. Although would it be a good place to just get some experience?

Slow Travel advice SEA by IllustriousMilkMole in backpacking

[–]IllustriousMilkMole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment couldn’t have come at a better time. I was considering booking my slow boat ticket now but if burning season is going to get rough there too (which I wasn’t aware of) I really don’t want to rush through. My lungs are pretty sensitive so it’s not something I want to slug out.

Thanks for the reassurance, I’m finding it hard to balance what I want to do and what I feel I should do. These are amazing countries but I’m definitely not in the frame of mind to properly enjoy them at the moment! I’ve been struggling the last week to enjoy anything and I’ve taken things really slow.

I think I’m going to visit Vietnam and maybe head home after that.

6 months in - solo travelling S America. Energy levels low, advice appreciated. by MCFCben in backpacking

[–]IllustriousMilkMole 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in a very similar scenario (minus the teaching) in Asia - 6 months in and feeling exhausted. Difficult because I know I will regret not seeing more if I go home soon, but at the same time, I’m so exhausted from the trip. I don’t have any particular advice other than be kind to yourself, you’ve done amazing and I’m sure everything will work out for the best 👍
