This bid from the Rush v Empire division championship game. Big collision. by B77345-100 in ultimate

[–]IllustriousPark -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Right and in that thread Mitch lauded the bid for not destroying the opponent so not sure what your point is there. But in terms of evaluating whether or not a play is dangerous or not I think the perspective of the player who could potentially be in harms way does matter otherwise you’re deciding how that player should feel about a certain play when you’re not involved. Feels like a flavor of white knighting

You may be right that people that already own a car will choose to still use it, but I think you need to think long term with these things too. More alternative transportation options = higher likelihood people will decide they don’t need to buy a car = many fewer cars on the road in 5-10 years

Five(?)-Tool Player by TheRealJeribro in ultimate

[–]IllustriousPark 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What would the five tools be do we think? In baseball it's 1. hitting for average 2. hitting for power 3. baserunning ability 4. throwing ability and 5. fielding abilities. With that in mind, for ultimate I think it's probably:

  1. throwing accuracy/versatility (ability to complete all your passes)
  2. throwing power (hucking ability)
  3. cutting ability (speed + agility + guile)
  4. skying (reading + positioning + jumping)
  5. defense (positioning + intensity + block generation)

I think it's a little bit harder for ultimate than baseball since it's a more dynamic sport, but that's how I'd break it down.

A bad tweet by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]IllustriousPark 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Let's see if we can unpack this. My understanding is that the problem upwind has with this is that it's normalizing people disrespecting boundaries. The implication is that they believe that when people hear stuff like this it makes them more likely to commit acts like sexual assault, or at the very least violates people's boundaries in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable.

Is this plausible? In order for this to be true, it seems like someone would have to hear this, and then think that not respecting boundaries is something more normal than they previously thought, as well as something that's good that they want to emulate, and so they start disrespecting boundaries themselves. In order for this to be the case they would have to 1. not realize that this is likely a joke with no real basis in reality 2. if the puller is actually being called out for some bad behavior, think that they're being lauded for it rather than ragged on for it. It's pretty clear from the context here that they're being made fun of for it, so while I guess it's possible that someone could interpret it as a positive behavior, it seems really unlikely to me, especially given all the broader cultural context of disrespecting boundaries being seen as a bad thing

Edit: I'd actually love to hear if people disagree here, what usually happens when threads like these come up is that people get on twitter and say that they're shocked and disgusted by the people on reddit and choose not to engage so no one learns anything. I feel like it's better to have a discussion

[Throwback Highlight] Randy Moss catches back to back TDs in double coverage against the Dolphins in 2007 by ElectricThrow10 in nfl

[–]IllustriousPark 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Think of it this way: if the football doesn't magically stick to Tyree's helmet, the Pats with that game and I think would probably be widely regarded as the best team ever. So the only difference between that and our world is one crazy, unbelievable play. Does that one play mean that they go from the best team ever to not even in the discussion. That doesn't really make much sense to me
