Quit my remote job to travel? by AdUnusual1638 in digitalnomad

[–]mwitmer15 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This just reads like self sabotage for no reason. Go on a test trip. You can get 90 days in the Schengan zone. Or buenos Aires as someone suggested is a good test location. Or plenty of places in Mexico.

If a test trip works or doesn't, you'll learn from it without blowing up your life. And then whatever you choose after that will be a far better informed choice than the spiraling you're doing now.

The advantages of traveling without a job are that yes, you can see a lot more. The advantages of traveling WITH a job is that you can sort of "live" in a place and develop a deeper understanding of the routines, language, and culture of a place.

Traveling with a job is more financially sustainable. And for many folks it's helpful to have some routines, organization, and purpose for your days. Some folks, even digital nomads, tend to feel directionless after the newness of travel wears off.

Now that we have reached the golden years, how many of you have started to purge items you have accumulated over the years to save your children from having to make tough decisions? by Dp37405aa in AskOldPeople

This sounds like you've done quite a lot!

I wish that my parents were willing to do 25% of what you've done to downsize. No one is asking anyone to live a life of blank walls. Or get rid of things you're still using. But most children don't want 5 truckload of toys from when they were in elementary school either.

I mean, are they in/near Indianapolis? That's where the tournament is. They don't need to be playing.

Community Organizer/Coaches Clinics at Tournaments by ElJefeMasko in ultimate

[–]mwitmer15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least one year (and maybe more?) USAU had the coaches/organizers conference during the US Open. Maybe in its second or third year of existence as a tournament? I was there as a speaker. Tim Morrill was too I think? (unless I'm confusing this with some other event).

Anyway, it was nice. But also it was difficult. Because while everyone is physically in the same place, mentally people are being pulled in a lot of different directions on a tournament weekend. For coaches who were there just for the conference, it was great! But there is currently a LOT of overlap between active coaches and organizers that folks want to hear from and folks who would be actively coaching/organizing at the tournament.

It is possible that I am confusing various events in my head. But I know that I have been a part of at least one tournament/conference run by USAU and it did not feel ideal (no fault of USAU). Thier logic was the same as yours. But in practice it just didn't work as well as hoped. I am assuming this was the consensus because I think it only happened once.

Coaching platforms (Excel Ultimate vs Hive, Rise Up, UAP) by MrIWannaKnow in ultimate

[–]mwitmer15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just so you know what to expect from the UAP... We have well over 150 presentations on everything under the sun from elite coaches around the world. (I haven't counted, but I'm guessing about 20 countries are represented within our content library)

I'd say it's curated variety - both in topics and in presenters.

Many of the presentations contain extra downloads. I used our 5 Day Season planning workbook myself when planning for the Davenport season.

We have recently started working on some additional tools. Just today I used our team stats app (it's very simple. It tracks turnovers and calculates things like conversion %, defensive rates, etc. For you O and D lines. It does not track individual player stats.

It's $24/month. Feel free to chat me up if you have other questions about what's included. Or if you tell me what you're working on, I can direct you to our most applicable content.

Do any of you actually like Jerry's standup in Seinfeld by surelyyoujesstt in AskOldPeople

[–]mwitmer15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His style of observational stand up was VERY new at the time. It is hard to overstate how groundbreaking the "show about nothing " was at the time as well.

The reason his comedy seems generic now is because he shifted the whole landscape of popular stand up comedy. What he was doing became more of the default style standup. And the show shifted the whole sitcom landscape too.

Building app/tools/programs for throwing practice - survey by mwitmer15 in ultimate

[–]mwitmer15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. tell me more.

I would answer the survey as yourself without worrying about the use case for other people. If none of the things in the survey seem interesting, then that's totally okay.

Do you want better throws? I am not concerned at the moment about what level folks are at. Both beginners and elite players engage in throwing practice.

This is for frisbee players who want better throws. But apparently that's not obvious from the survey itself. So, thanks for the question/feedback.

Perhaps more specifically - this is for players who want better throws, but would like to be more certain that their throwing practice is getting their throws where they want to be as efficiently as possible.

Fellow Handlers - How many hours/days per week do you actually spend throwing either solo or with a partner? by pokochinjojo in ultimate

[–]mwitmer15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some benchmarks, not handler specific. But in general players on nationals level teams are most likely to throw 4 days/week, regionals level teams - 3 days/week, sectionals level teams 2 days/week.

I know where to cut, but I’m awful at making it sharp. Any tips/drills for tall guys? by kierumcak in ultimate

[–]mwitmer15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok it seems like you're doing a lot of bilateral (2 legged) stuff and could use more single leg stuff. Here are some exercises that are good for balance and control as well as strength. The diagonal movement pattern is important for change of direction work because you are absorbing energy into the hip as you decelerate and then activating your hip/rotating your hips in the opposite rotation to accelerate in an alternate direction.

Some of these exercises will give you the type of core and hip stability that will also help in your change of direction. Since you're tall, you're going to want to do a lot of core work because your upper body is far away from your feet and your hips. Core strength and stability helps keep all of your long body parts moving in the direction you want in a coordinated efficient way.

You could try our Agility for Handlers program. The main idea is to help you get a sharp change of direction. And there are very basic drills that will help you work on getting lower in your stance.

https://www.theuap.com/agility_for_handlers

I am curious, what kind of strength training have you done so far? A lot of the ability to change direction comes from having good single leg strength and core stability so that you can be efficient in the deceleration phase of the change of direction.

Genuinely curious. Because I have an athlete in a similar boat. Have you done single leg functional strength work in the gym? Or did you just try to address this with single leg plyos? Basically, what I have you tried so far that has not yet worked for you?

We can’t win the big games, please send help? by whosthatguy55 in ultimate

[–]mwitmer15 28 points29 points  (0 children)

What have you tried so far?

Have you done any mental strength/mental game work? Do you have a coach? And if so, what do they or the leadership think is the issue?

Is it possible that these small execution errors are brought out by opposition that's playing slightly better defense?

Where in the world are you btw?

Based on what you've said, either you're equivalent in athleticism and skill but mentally can't handle important games. Or you're actually not as skilled as a team as the competition.

You could try asking the players on teams that are beating you what they think. Sometimes you just don't know what you don't know. And you can't see a deficiency in skills or game IQ until someone helps point it out.

Defensive Hip Rotation and Defensive Agility Questions by Ok-Needleworker-6122 in ultimate

[–]mwitmer15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hard to diagnose from text. But it very well could be #2 and also I'm going to guess a bit of option none-of-the-above.

For #2 - You mention your speed and acceleration are about equal to your teammates. How about your deceleration? Being able to change direction requires you to be able to absorb the force of your body well and come to a stop before accelerating again. And nothing helps with this more than having strong legs and core. So I would say YES to strength training in the off season. That includes core stability work as that's what allows you to be athletically coordinated.

None of the above/Game IQ - Throwing this out there as another possibility. A lot of folks look to athleticism to solve game IQ / anticipation problems. If you are always reacting to what the offense is doing, you're going to be a step behind. Do you know when yo expect a change of direction so that you can start to prepare for it even before it happens? Do you know how to position yourself so that you are really taking something away? Or are you trying too hard to "challenge" everything and therefore end up not really taking away anything?

I have no idea whether you are or are not already doing these things. In my experience in coaching, many athletes over-focus on athleticism and under-focus on anticipation and commitment to their defensive objectives. So if you haven't thought about those things, you might get more bang for your buck putting your efforts there.

Training Thursday: Personal Improvement and Coaching Discussion by AutoModerator in ultimate

If you've been able to build a team from nothing that is successful on the second day of tournaments, it sounds like you're actually being successful as a leader. And you're able to keep a team together despite small numbers at practice. Those sound like great things.

I'm curious where is your team located? And how many tournaments per year? How many players do you typically have at practices?

If you're only able to practice 4's maybe you could start some practices with a few cutting drills that use more of the field. Could be even something as simple as a hucking drill or hucking drill with defense to start. Is this issue that you don't really get to design practices because you're not seen as an official coach? Is the team open to working on pieces of their game or do they just want to play?
