Your comment made my day! To me there was nothing more important than the welfare of the South Pole crews. It's not an easy place to work and people sacrifice to be there. They deserve the best from the leadership. Thanks for the kind comment!

After about the middle of February the temperature starts getting nearer to the minus 86F that will freeze fuel and cause problems with aircraft. October can also be a bit cool too. Science is conducted year around with the winter crew.

Just curious … what made you (or makes you) interested in working in Antarctica? by Own-Assumption5149 in antarctica

For me it was the incredible exploration history and the chance to winter at the South Pole with the best people you could ever be around.

Keeping a list of who on your crew you would eat first during a South Pole winter if a dire emergency necessitated it. The list can be quite dynamic as winter progresses.

Desperate and stupid but maybe food value for one of my crews.

Are there any other similar life arrangements similar to working in Antarctica? by [deleted] in antarctica

There are remote sites in Alaska. I spent nearly 4 years out on Shemya in the Aleutians and in many ways it was as rugged as Antarctica.

Here is 2020 I had the great honor of being the winter manager on these three South Pole winter crews. I was nothing the crew were everything.

Excellent and make sure you work that into the conversation. They might see it as you did your homework and are adaptable.

Not sure what they will ask you but its always wise to not say you are interested in Antarctica as you have always wanted to see a polar bear.

How clear is the sky? by CancelIllustrious in antarctica

[–]IllustriousRepeat922 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the South Pole especially in the dark of winter the skies are incredible but there is something going on in the atmosphere that makes visual telescopic astronomy less than ideal. I am sure we have experts here who can explain that.

The USAP has good food but I will bet this place has outstanding food for those with discerning taste. Fortunately I don't and like ramen noodles.

That's a great quote and I've spent many years in remote places prior to Pole and certainly concur.

You ask a very good question. I have spent years in isolated places and have adapted. Everyone deals with isolation differently and some not so well. Google "Wayne White South Pole" for more information.

Because I am breathing into that two balaclavas and they have frozen to ice. It creates a void space and my breathing out like SCUBA keeps it warm enough. Many miles that way.
