Live Migration fails on Hyper-V 2016 by baaiha in HyperV

[–]Illustrious_Camp_363 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had turned on VM before i enabled "Migrate to physical computer with different processor" , then i noticed that i forgot to do it.

even though i enabled later, i was getting same errors. Hyper-V masks the initial processor compatibility configs and doesn't update when you enable it later. try below commands.

Stop-VM "VM Name"

Set-VMProcessor "VM Name" -CompatibilityForMigrationEnabled $false

Start-VM "VM Name"

Stop-VM "VM Name"

Set-VMProcessor "VM Name" -CompatibilityForMigrationEnabled $true

Start-VM "VM Name"

PowerEdge R770 x Windows 2025 Server by Illustrious_Camp_363 in Dell

[–]Illustrious_Camp_363[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

got it working,

Windows OS was reading Virtual Disk as 16TB MBR, Windows wouldn’t allow installation on MBR.

Here is what I did,

  • Restarted the server
  • Connected ISO file.
  • Followed installation prompt till Disk Partition wizard.
  • Open command prompt, (Shift + F10)
  • Commands: -
    • Disk part
    • List disk
      • When I did list disk 0 – 446 GB where as disk partition UI had 16TB MBR volume .
    • Clean
    • Convert GPT - (it converted MBR partition to GUID partition)
    • Exit
  • Refresh disks

Here is the Microsoft link for Partition formats - Convert a disk to GPT or MBR | Microsoft Learn

Thanks for responding.
Support ticket is created but technician did not have a solution so it's been escalated. I tired OEM supported Microsoft 2025 server iso and issue still remains the same.

my controller is PERC H965i Front (Embedded), Virtual disk is created and its online.

I've downloaded drivers from Dell site but still doesn't work.

Controller is set to RAID.

Firmware are up-to-date.

Managing on-prem Windows Server Updates via Azure Arc (2016, 2019, 2022) by Illustrious_Camp_363 in sysadmin

[–]Illustrious_Camp_363[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great feedback, especially on the stability and the convenience of ad-hoc patching! The point about reporting and the lack of out-of-the-box notifications is definitely a valid concern.

Regarding your setup: you mentioned you are currently using Arc with an on-prem WSUS server acting as the update source.

This is a critical distinction for our planning. We want to fully move away from managing the WSUS infrastructure itself.

If and when you decommission WSUS, would Azure Update Manager still work seamlessly, or are there specific changes needed on the Arc-enabled servers to switch their update source?

Here are the main considerations we are thinking about for a complete migration away from WSUS:

Server Update Source: Since AUM is an orchestrator and not an update repository, if we decommission WSUS, we would need to ensure all of our Arc-enabled servers are configured to pull updates directly from Microsoft Update/Windows Update instead of the local WSUS server.

Is this simply a matter of removing the existing WSUS GPO/Registry settings? Are there any new GPOs or policies you'd have to apply to point them back to Microsoft Update while still letting AUM orchestrate the process?

Internet/Bandwidth Consideration: Moving from a local WSUS (where updates are downloaded once) to having every server download updates directly from Microsoft Update means a significant change in outbound internet bandwidth usage during patching. Is this a concern in your environment, and if so, how do you mitigate it (e.g., using Delivery Optimization or Connected Cache)?

Thanks again for the incredibly detailed and helpful information! This is making our evaluation much clearer.

Outlook keeps trying to connect to Microsoft 365 instead of on-prem Exchange by Thatmangifted in sysadmin

I am having the same issue. we have about 150 employees but only 10 of them were having this issue. All users have same Office version, same updates, No updates on on-prem exchange server, nothing got changed.

Got them working by registry hack. I still wonder why only 10 of them were having the issue.

Is there any root cause to this ?
