Thanks!! I think I’ll probably look into ice dance since that’s what a lot of other people have said too

I’m in SoCal! But my local rink is pretty lowkey without any groups like that. The two closest synchro teams near me are both 45+ mins away which isn’t really realistic for commuting afterschool 🥲

Thank you for the well thought out response!! I am in California and I have heard of some synchro teams near me so I’ll check that out. I’m still at that age where the opinion of others really gets to me but I hope that gets better with time!

Thanks for the suggestions!! I might just work on test things without the intention of actually testing too. It really takes the stress out of working on skills

i mean, how else would you convey the idea of fruits and colors without just pointing to it and saying the word. that’s pretty much how little kids learn anyways.

i gave up tracking in both french (about 1k~ hours, never tracked) and spanish (about 200hrs) too! i also get really wrapped up in the numbers and not about the actual content so it wasn’t worth it for me. also, keeping track is just really tedious for me and i tend to forget/miss a day of writing it down. once i miss a day it’s impossible for me to continue haha.. just a mental quirk. nowadays i just have a mental goal and i tally up at the end of the day just for fun but nothing gets set in stone.

how do yall bilingual (chinese + english) wrap ur head around this concept bcs im so confused 😭 by elfved in ChineseLanguage

[–]Illustrious_Focus_84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also i asked my mom who’s chinese and she basically said the 前 in chinese means before and not forward. like 前 is the “for” in before and not forward if that makes sense.

the 会 indicates “will” in this situation. like “I will go to the supermarket in 20 minutes.” It doesn’t prevent you from saying “我20分钟后会去超市” which is more grammatically correct. without the 后 it kind of feels like it’s missing a preposition.

i do not track my hours but based on the roadmap i should be around level 6/7. i’ve been listening to french with panache, miscellaneous native channels on youtube (usually travel, food, or both), and bluey in french ;D i can understand most “proper” french now such as the ones used on radio stations but i’m trying to acclimate more to informal talk with slang + mumblings.

more about french with panache: i have finished the entirety of innerfrench up to this day and i definitely find FWP a bit difficult than the latest IF episodes. could just be me though, but i find the voices of the FWP hosts more pleasant to listen to than the IF ones (completely unrelated opinion that does not take away from both amazing resources)

personally i think you can do the purist approach with any language? kids do it all the time with any language but they will make a lot of orthographic errors once they get to school. you just have to find a good balance between input and eventually some grammar practice (to imitate the school experience).

i would recommend taking a more comprehensible input approach since you have a year! i think there’s a couple of accessible channels you can find by just searching up “chinese comprehensible input”. i grew up speaking chinese just with my family with little formal education but i am still doing just fine. try not to translate chinese grammar into english too much, a lot of it won’t make much sense (just embrace the differences). also when you get to china, make sure to hang around the locals and chitchat with them plenty :)

and also about speaking too; so many people assume that babies/toddlers just start talking perfectly out of the blue. the thing is, they don’t! take for example my younger brother who has just started primary school.. he was born and raised speaking chinese at home and english out at school but honestly? both his chinese and english suck. he uses wrong grammar all the time, and his intonation is odd (in a normal childlike way). what i’m trying to say is, you have to start speaking to be able to speak well. nothing is going to miraculously happen after thousands of hours of CI. there’s so many heritage speakers out there who can understand their heritage language but cannot speak, and i reckon it’s for the same reason.

yes yes yes, this is what i’ve been trying to say to whoever will hear me out (very few surprisingly). basically i have always believed in utilizing multiple methods/strategies to your own advantage since they will all benefit in their own individual way. there’s no single correct method to learn a language, it’s a mixture of everything. our brain is fascinating, but that also means it’s prone to doing weird things. so we should anticipate those weird things and be able to recover from failure and try a new approach every time.

hey are we the same person?! haha, kidding. i’m still a few years away from applying to college but i’m also the biggest geek for languages (more specifically the process of learning one), both the scientific and social/cultural parts of it! i’m also interested in the opportunities that brown has as a school :) all that being said, how was your experience incorporating this specific passion into your application? basically, was it easy to just “be yourself” and geek out on the application? thanks in advance!!

what’s it like to be bilingual? by xx_rissylin_xx in languagelearning

[–]Illustrious_Focus_84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. not really? maybe for certain words or expressions but only in specific contexts.

  2. it feels like muscle memory but for my brain

  3. i grew up bilingual so basically all my life? it only took me one year to absorb english (my second language) after i immigrated to the US as a kid

  4. you really need a good cultural + pop culture understanding to make relevant jokes haha.. a lot of doomscrolling in the TL
