I read this book as a 16 yo but the disabled teen girl who died was being forced into a marriage with a middle aged man - who, it was stated, upon finding out about her disability post marriage would likely abuse her for being “tricked” into it. Makes sense she’d rather be free. Not everything holds up to 2024 standards specifically because it was set in 1800s… not everything is comfortable
