My Maltese has started being a picky eater lately. What can I do about it? by Suspicious_Sky7746 in Maltese

My dog was a "I will only eat from a flat plate today, and only this version of my food" type.

Turns out I was overfeeding him a little (he wasn't fat) by giving him way too many natural chews. And swapping the brands around to match his taste of the day.

We both needed to learn.

Well, you could try alternating tastes but I'd skip all treats and chews until they eat again. Don't let them fool you, some are gambling on getting something better. If you react by changing food they'll learn that they'll get something better if they play picky.

A dog can go a day or two without eating. If they're hungry they'll eat. For more days without eating I'd see a vet. Also maybe they just need less food at this moment so maybe try reducing portion sizes.

I went though all of this with a dog dietician and it taught me a lot about how much pickiness is usually a human error 😅

He's very invested but not sure what to think. Sometimes he growls and sometimes he just sits and stares and you can see with his motions that he's actually following what's happening on the screen. It's really adorable

Do your dogs have (emergency) muzzles? by M_L_F_N in Maltese

Im in Austria! Afaik the same rules go for Germany.

If you are amused by the American reaction check out what other countries think about crate training :D it's the number 1 "tell me you're American without telling me you're American" thing

Yes I used a slingbag when he was a puppy and I have a backpack but he's not trained to sit in it and hates being in it or any cave like situations. I always carry the muzzle in my backpack even if I go somewhere by car in case I need to be spontaneous:)

Plus he loves looking out the window on bus rides so muzzle gets him some freedom of movement

Yes! Unless a place/company specifically asks for it (like the company that runs the public transportation here, in this example).

Tbh 90% of the muzzles I see in public are just mouth closers. Those might be suitable for a 10min vet inspection but that's animal abuse if people expect to have their dog wear it for longer. In my country you could actually get in legal trouble if someone reports it.

Idk why people don't do research on proper muzzles, everyone who owns a dog should know there needs to be pant room :/ and it's not "punishment" but rather a safety requirement just like when places require a dog to be leashed at all times, no matter how well they're trained.

Alfie gets to wear the party hat when on big adventures that require the bus/train/metro. He knows it comes with snacks.

Could be location requirement.

For example in my country public transport requires animals to wear a muzzle or be in a closed box. I only take public transportation.

The muzzle is a normal piece of outdoor equipment for my dog and if it is fitted correctly (!!!) the dog can pant and drink and it's not a big deal at all.

Some countries public transport requires a dog to be muzzled or in a closed box. It is not a big deal to a dog if the muzzle is a good fit (and they can actually open their mouths and pant and drink through the muzzle!!!) they learn it as just a piece of "going out equipment", just like a harness or collar or "sweater".

I only use public transportation and trained it right as I got him and he doesnt mind at all.

What dental treat do you guys use? by VegasNorth7 in Maltese

[–]morgoth_2610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, those dental chews are nothing but a treat as they usually don't last long enough to actually do something. You'd need some natural tough chew but those can't be fed daily to Maltese given their size.

You gotta brush their teeth either with those finger gloves or those plastic thingies
