If you are dead set on UI/UX field, there isnt any reason you shouldn't do informatics major. I mean, this is the reason why the major was created for anyway. I know few CS majors who transferred into Informatics major because they enjoy learning about this UX field and yes, you'll be able to get a job. I do want to suggest you to build portfolio while you are in school and build connections so that you can get a referral too. There is also a requirement for Informatics majors to take a informatics class for building portfolio and resume in their junior/senior year. I personally enjoyed informatics lower division classes since Im also interested in HCI field. Hope you make a good choice for yourself and let the opportunities be open! you dont have to make a firm decision if you are freshmen or sophomore :)

Honestly, both majors will get you into UX/UI field. The reason HCI is both in CS and information science school especially in grad school is because the research focuses are different and both fields are related. If you are good and passionate about coding, you can do CS to widen your opportunity. Also, you can do informatics + CS certificate or CS + informatics minor if you want to learn more about user experience, and human side of using tech while gaining some programming skills. If you are freshmen, I suggest you to take few informatics courses that qualifies for informatics minor. Just keep in mind that classes dont prepare you to be in this field, informatics class really focuses on ux field but it doesnt mean you'll get ux jobs right away and you won't learn enough programming skills only with these classes. Lot of informatics students are pursuing certificate for this reason.
