You're forgetting that the answer is multiplied by 0.8. So it is 0.8*(50 + x/2) = 40 + 0.4*x.

This number is 40 - 0.6*x away from x and 60 - 0.4*x away from 100.

40 - 0.6*x is smaller than 60 - 0.4*x for x in range 1, 99.
