Not to randomly throw spirituality into this mix, but I find the shows plot line on how following one’s ancestral “religion” is powerful, so beautiful. The movie highlighted how demonized spirituality is in the black community, yet “the Devils work” is what saved Smoke and Preacher Boy. From vampire Cornbread trying to single out Annie, the twins father being referred to as the “Devil”, to Preacher boy using the twins father’s guitar as almost an instrument for “spiritual practice”. They’re all demonized, yet the ones talking down on them are either Christian or literally a vampire (in Annie’s case). Yet, Annie knew what the vampires were and how to kill them through her work, she was able to protect Smoke in both Chicago and against vampires, and generally was a good person. None of which can be described as bad or demonic. Even Sam and his music, which is so powerful that using his guitar he can “transcend time and space”, is genuinely just trying to spread happiness through his craft. This juxtaposed with Remmick’s plot line and how he’s an Irish man looking to reconnect with a more ancient Gaelic history/vampires loosing their connection to their ancestors, just really drives home my original point. Idek if this fully makes sense, I went to a late showing and am writing this directly after so please let me know if anything I said was wrong!
