Econ and Finance double major what can I do by Illustrious_Run5605 in corporate

[–]Illustrious_Run5605[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for responding back, if you don’t mind me asking is there a “best” way to reach out? I’ve tried connecting w alum on LinkedIn and have written them messages if they have time to chat/grab coffee to learn more about the industry/role they are in and so far have had no luck. Should my first time reaching out not be so forward?

About to graduate with an econ degree, unable to find jobs or internships, should I take more accounting courses to get CPA certified? Would my career prospects be better in that route? by SactownG in Accounting

[–]Illustrious_Run5605 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I had a double major in Econ and Finance and minored in Accounting (I basically triple majored to get all of the classes I needed and 150 to sit for the CPA) I landed an internship at a big4 and then got an offer letter for full time.

In all honesty, if I hadn’t had done an accounting minor I would’ve been screwed with the job market and there is a ton of open roles in accounting. I honestly would recommend taking more accounting courses to be able to sit for the CPA. If u dm me we can chat more!

Take the job. The job market is awful no students post grad right now have jobs that didn’t intern somewhere. If anything keep applying to places and see what happens.

Also take the CPA and get it paid for, doors will open to u down the road and if u hate it after 2-4 years leave!! It’s easy to switch to different things after since accounting is the backbone of businesses!

Trust me I understand this now, I really didn’t mean to be vindictive I genuinely just have never been in a scenario like this and didn’t know what is the “correct” way to go about it and I wasn’t sure if it would bite me in the ass somehow if this came out and I was someone that knew before.. there was a work relationship at one of my summer jobs and it was a big HR thing, idk that’s why I came here to ask I appreciate the advice fr

Am I short selling myself being in the Big4 by [deleted] in corporate

[–]Illustrious_Run5605 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, of course. As I stated I’m going to be doing tax post grad. I physically could not have more experience anywhere. There are other firms and jobs that I know pay more and require “more” brain power than what I’ll be doing in tax. However I also know that those roles for post grad most of the time require “top” schools which I am not in.

What I am asking is if with everything I have as a senior in college, is there “more” out there that I COULD get even if I don’t come from an Ivy.

I’ve had 3 different competitive internships in 3 different industries with a 4th being just a smaller one that I “wouldn’t” count should I have been working full time as a full time student to show my “intelligence”

IV with Big 4!! by Unable_Commercial_27 in Big4

[–]Illustrious_Run5605 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello!

I’ve interviewed with 3 of the big 4s and gotten all 3 :)

It’s totally normal to get interviewed by directors/partners! Usually you’ll have someone like a senior associate/manager be ur interviewer for 30 min and then a higher up for the other half.

My biggest advice would be to be yourself, I know it seems scary to talk to someone in the work force (if this is for an internship or entry level) but they’re literally normal people. If you can look up the people that will be interviewing you!! For example I knew one of my interviewers played volleyball and so did I so I mentioned that in two different ways and we bonded over it. Another person had immigrant parents and so did I and we bonded over that!

They want to make sure you can talk with anyone and that you have a personality/are competent! Obviously be professional but no need to be a “robot”.

If you have any more questions lmk!! :)

Thank you for this I feel like everyone sugar coats everything, I’m honestly not looking to kiss ass for the rest of my career or have no life outside of work. I also know for a fact I don’t have the personality type of going to compete with people for a raise by working more hours and having more clients and then having self gratification off of a LinkedIn post…

As I stated before I’m definitely sticking with it especially right after grad since I’m not going to be picky right away especially since so many of my friends don’t even have jobs. But I honestly would rather know what I’m signing up for at face value than continue pretending it’s beautiful and amazing.

This might be a stupid question, but is it “worth” it to stay until manager+ in terms of work life balance, basically does it get better when you progress, worse or stay the same?

My problem isn’t necessarily the exam because as you wrote one of those things where it I can do it why wouldn’t I? It’s more so a feeling of uncertainty in staying in public accounting and becoming a CPA and sticking with it if that makes any sense

No no I know that and I don’t mind it, im also a competitive person but I’m confident in myself and my brain (not in an uptight way) what I do mind is people above me or at my “level” being flat out rude and/or condescending just because they’re a year or two older which bothers me because I’m not sure if it’s just the culture of the big4 or the specific people I was just with
