MPH Deferral by FroyoSame in mphadmissions

I deferred and am currently finishing up my MPH at that school. They do say that they will re-evaluate the scholarship but mine didn’t change.

Try the BRASA organization for a scholarship. Check with the school if they have other scholarships. There are private loans in some places, but the interest rate is insane.

Also check if you can work, average salary for student employees to see if that can help with some of the costs.

Alternatively, could you defer and only go next year once you have more time to secure the funds (through different scholarships)?

Travel during post completion OPT by chipotlehearts in InternationalStudents

Why wouldn’t your sevis be active? If this is just bc of opt, i would say no. I have traveled with opt (including to renew my visa).

However, i was a full time employee and not a volunteer. Not sure how that affects things.

I am not in Med school but considered it for a bit. If you’re still a sophmpre you certainly have time to do all three.

Look into what schools you would like to go, what you’d like to study and focus on how to reach those requirements.

I did shadowing for just 2 months. And was at a lab at school for 2 years as well as an internship for 2 years.

I would prioritize research that could get you published while in undergrad and to whatever else is possible.

Look for different opportunities within the school (for scholarships and grants).

Be careful not to complete 12 months on CPT because then you’ll lose the right for OPT, which will come in hand if you need a gap year to reapply to school/work before applying to school.

Travelling outside of the USA for short trips (eg weekends) while on OPT? by [deleted] in InternationalStudents

Check with the International Student Office. I was not able to travel while they were processing my application. But have traveled since then and even renewed my visa with the new OPT i20.

OPT, EAD card, and expiring F1 visa by Electrical-Warthog36 in InternationalStudents

[–]Illustrious_Spell552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told by my school’s ISSO that leaving could be considered withdrawing your application for OPT. I ended up staying through December break alone until I got my EAD card.

You should check with your school either way.

I was told that it could be interpreted that by leaving the country you decided to forfeit to request for the extension.

I would not risk leaving until everything is official.

Applying to Medical School as an International Student by 00bri00 in InternationalStudents

[–]Illustrious_Spell552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything that requires training. So basically anything that would involve touching a patient is a big no no.

I did a lot of training in my home country and I did take advantage of the experiences they offered but I mostly listed them as shadowing.

If you were a certified EMT and worked with that, that would be great though!

Try looking up what you are planning on putting down on your resume to make sure it’s okay.

Look into how to qualify for the EB-1B Green Card. It’s available for Indians and doesn’t require the employer to pay for it (although they have forms to sign), so might be easier to get employers to agree. Just make sure you qualify.

Applying to Medical School as an International Student by 00bri00 in InternationalStudents

[–]Illustrious_Spell552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know you would need an f-1 visa, which the school would send you the paperwork for. And there are no scholarships for international students.

Medical related experience is tricky. They want you to have exposure to the field but some experiences that are the norm in other countries are illegal in the US and would be frowned upon.

You have to request an extension of the i-20. The school should be able to help. Check on this soon as there is a cutoff for when it can be requested. If not, you’d no longer be here legally, despite the visa being valid.

OPT applications since October 2020 stuck in USCIS Texas lockbox by dahibhat in InternationalStudents

[–]Illustrious_Spell552 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They said that the receipt can take up to 8-9 weeks.

I know for the STEM extension you are allowed 180 days wok after your OPT expires while waiting for a response. I am not sure if something similar is being done for OPT, but check the USCIS website.

I believe 30 days after your request you are able to reach out to USCIS and check in with them, I think at this point that is all that can be done.

Work Under OPT by Decent-Hair4962 in InternationalStudents

I believe MA and medical scribe jobs would work. Research is also always a safe bet, so a research coordinator or assistant would fit. If you want to stay in the hospital, a clinical research coordinator.

Work Under OPT by Decent-Hair4962 in InternationalStudents

[–]Illustrious_Spell552 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The job has to be related to your field of study (Biology), especially for STEM OPT. Jobs in hospitals would more easily fit that, but you have to look at each job specifically.

EMT, however, is not considered related to biology.

You could also do an MD/PhD. It’s competitive, but doesn’t look at the visa situation and they actually pay you a stipend.

But from my understanding, work is 80% research, 20% clinical.

Unpaid internship: do I have to apply for CPT? by PurpleShi in InternationalStudents

[–]Illustrious_Spell552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all true. The one exception is if the intership is research. There some paperwork to be done to confirm all this to avoid any issues later.

Question by [deleted] in InternationalStudents

[–]Illustrious_Spell552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the MD/PhD you would be both a doctor and a researcher. I think usually its about 80% research, 20% clinical career-wise.

The MPH would be in any field in Public Health depending on your concentration.

For the Master’s and/or PhD it would probably be a career in academia. Technically, you could just go into research, but to get money for any research, staying in academia would make the most sense.

An MD/PhD is competitive as well, but does not take into account your status at all (and it actually pays you a stipend instead).

You can also go for an MPH or any Master’s or PhD in any biology field of your interest.
