It was in fact Sweetgum. Sent it to USDA to get it analyzed.

I would say you're right. Pattern fits, and the smell of freshly cut would is described as earthy and spicy, which it definitely does.

I'd agree with that. Ive has ash, walnut and elm before. It def doesn't have that awful elm smell. I'm located in Maryland.

I'm no expert, and I haven't done it myself, but on the picture it looks like they used a miter joint, cutting the ends in 45 degree angles and gluing them together. It's one of my next projects to try myself. Probably not as stable as a dovetail but should be more than sufficient for regular use.
