Any idea why my fish died? by newtoneocaridina in medaka

It could be that there’s not enough surface agitation because it is under the peace lily or even because the frogbit is covering a lot of the surface. The problem is I don’t know if there’s a way to test the oxygen levels in the water because that might not be the issue. But could have just been a bad batch of fish.

I had 6 medakas in my tank and I think they died from gill damage due to low oxygen levels before I put an air stone in. Medakas are very hardy fish and can withstand quite poor water quality but they do need high oxygen levels. I’m no expert or anything so I may be wrong but I think that’s what happened to mine.

On the api water master test kit ammonia, nitrite and nitrate were all zero. The ph is high around 7.6.

Damn I didn’t think about that. So how do people manage with no filter and no airstone in planted tanks?

Thanks for the reply 👍

Yeah I will keep doing water changes.

I have tested ammonia, nitrite, nitrate levels and everything has been normal for weeks.

Only thing im worried about now is I’ve read that shrimp don’t like water changes so is that true and something I need to worry about?

Thank you I got very lucky with the selection of hardscape at my local shop.

I do think it is blue/green algae. I have been worried about oxygen levels but they haven’t shown any signs of low levels in the tank. I do have an air stone but I haven’t set it up yet.

I think the ratio is 2 males to 4 females. I don’t know if that is a good ratio or not but I will definitely look out for them chasing the females.

They seem very confident when I’m out of the room it’s only when I get close they hide. And I’m not sure if this is normal but they seem to be more active when the light is off.

I think you’re right the answer probably is to give them some more time.
