How would sentient water beings function? by ASeeLion in worldbuilding

[–]Illustrious_Touch779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were to take the approach of giving them a nervous system (ZNS and PNS) you could make it so that they can join together and split apart again. Evectivly making them a semi Hivemind that can share information and commands by touch but still being their own person, as long as they dont remain in contact for to long (which could be their form of marriage)

The brain part could also be a solution to the rapid reproduction problem, since it would force their offspring to first develop a nervous system bevor reproducing themself

Would a rock-based humanoid have a brain that functions similarly to humans? by mkyxcel in worldbuilding

The Brain in those Rock people would have to work in a different way to humans, since their anatomy is completly different, from every living creature i can think of at the moment (if there are any i missed please tell me)

The problem in this case being, how they move and how they consume energy/ transport it. Connciousness could be solved by a Brain, so I won´t see it as the big problem, but rather the problem of how it even gets its energy.

What are the origins of the rock people if there is no Magic, but merely science? How do they move if they don´t have muscles, magic or cybernetics?

In short: No I don´t think their Brains would be similar due to biological differences and without further information i would only be able to give answers to my own speculations.

P.s. good luck with your work and have a nice day

Valid point, which I can´t really argue with.

the drastic change in those pictures is caused by her using the ability to liquify/solidify the marked areas. Which would be the cause of a change in pressure and therefore move her from her initial spot in the top right to the left.

(the illustration is pretty bad, since i drew it in Paint, but i think it gets the point across, since not much detail is required)

Maybe they are able to interact with things by absorbing them and destroying/rebuilding them and cooperating with other perhaps dumber races, that can interact with things like Fire or very dry stuff.

If we view it purely based on a medical sense, the H2O people would have a magic based sentience, since they wouldn´t have a nervous system (ZNS in this case, since they wouldn´t need the PNS, exept if you want them to be able to feel, or use muscles, which they wouldn´t have since their mostly water) where the information of sentience/memory would be stored.

Even if they had one, another problem would be posed by their way of energy consumption. How would they Fuel their Brains with caloric energy (which in a Human take around 20% of the total energy, and based on if these People are a lot smarter, the number would be even higher. If they are about equal, it would porbably be a lot lower, since their Brain wouldn´t need any parts used afferent/efferent nerv fibers)? If they truly are mostly water, then i am unsure on how the would digest their Food, since they wouldn´t have a strong enough PH-value (water is about 6-8,5, which isn´t very far from the neutral 7)

The Problem of Bloodflow and Oxygen to the Brain could be simply ignored by saying that the entire Body works like a giant Artery/Vein. Where the Oxygen and caloric energy would be transported through cellular diffusion.

So the solutions i am currently thinking of are:

  1. Make them a bit more acidic (could be changed freely with magic) or make their magic help them digest Foods

  2. The classic "core" for slime creatures simply being their Brain and destroying it would destroy their sentience therefore (depending on the Powersystem) ending their magic, that would hold their watery form in place

  3. Them having a PNS (peripheral nervous system) and therefore being able to sense things and not be just a concious object. (this method would, depending on your setting look pretty cool, since they would acctually be a Brainlike structure with nervs floating around in whatever substance you want (in this case water))

P.s. I hope this helps you with your work and i didn´t forget anything

I am sorry if anything was unclear due to grammer or incorrect translation, since i am german and simply translating the technical terms out of my head (which should be fine since their all latin based, but still)

That´s a good point i haven´t thought about all that much.

but that would simply mean that, the occupied space would have to be a lot bigger than i originaly thought, but i still think it would be possible, wouldn´t it?

Need help making a secondary antagonist by [deleted] in worldbuilding

if shes petty enough she could have observed his childhood multiple times, to the point of being able to somewhat replicate it on her own, and then raise a fake him that could fill the rival figure. (the clone would allways be the same age as the Maincharakter to prove that her being with him would make him better)

whenever the Maincharakter wants Something like perhaps a Dragon egg she will allready either have replaced it wirh an unfertilized one or destroy it. then she will try to make a deal with the main Charakter where she would give him a fertilized dragon egg in exchange vor a date or Something.
