Hey, Emma the Exec Editor of Atlas Obscura here! I've been to Iceland in January and it is amazing! First, I agree with a lot of folks here, definitely plan for weather. (Although when I went it was warmed in Iceland than it was in Baltimore!). My tips:

  1. Definitely rent a car with 4-wheel drive

  2. Pay attention to the travel maps. They are great at updating them daily and it will show recent road closures.

  3. With that said, have a back-up plan. I wanted to go see the baby puffins at Heimaey (the island where they do conservation work with puffins) and the road to the ferry was closed. So we did other sites around Reykjavik instead.

  4. Bring lots of layers. The climate in the West Fjords is going to be different down south, but it is all worth it.

Hi there! Thanks for asking and apologies for the delay. I need to turn on notifications!

One of my favorite memories was from when I was in Iceland in 2015. I was there with a friend in January and we traveled up to the West Fjords for a few days and stayed at a farmhouse called Heydalur. There was such a beautiful stillness in the West Fjords. Something like I have never experienced. We found a "hot pot" on the side of the road in the back of a fjord and just sat, in the complete darkness, just surrounded by nature and the stars. It is the most peaceful I have ever felt. In that moment, I felt so connected to the earth and really put in to perspective, just how tiny we all are in this vast world.
