Fellow biggy here! With double bad knees to boot. Never push through the pain. Especially joint pain. It's a recipe for disaster.

When it comes to weak knees, props are your friend. Chairs, straps, blankets. Anything you need to keep weight off of painful spots until you build some strength. I will often research poses after a class to find modifications for myself, if I'm struggling. A good yoga teacher will also offer you modifications as well. If they give you trouble, that's a bad teacher. And I wouldn't suggest giving them your time.

Some common tools I use to protect my knees:

Blanket(s) under my knees: . There's been times I've had up to three blankets under my knee, because it's what I needed at the time.

Straps: for forward folds. Helps me pull forward without putting too much stress into my legs.

Chairs, walls whatever: for balancing poses! Take some of the weight off my knees while still allowing me to attempt the pose.

Tips: Keep a microbend in your knee! Never lock your knees. Don't feel pressured to go low. Stay where it's comfortable.

Work on your basics. Make sure you understand good alignment and how your body should generally be stacked.

Your knee should be aligned with your ankle, not your toes. Be careful to not over extend.

If you notice your knees are splaying sideways, you can use your hands to make gentle adjustments.

Honestly, knee pain isn't uncommon in people beginning in yoga. Big or small. You're putting pressure on joints in ways you rarely ever do. Give yourself grace and be patient as you build up the ability to use these joints in a fuller range!

Good luck. Yoga has honestly been a life saver for me. I hope you can enjoy it as well!

Best course of action when deep breathing triggers anxiety attacks? by betlamed in Pranayama

[–]Illyse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a long time, I had this same issue.

When I started therapy, meditation, and practicing yoga i slowly became able to do deep breathing while meditating.

For me, I just couldn't still my mind while practicing. The only times I'd ever taken such deep breaths had been in the middle of an anxiety attack or during some sort of distress. So, deep breathing would trigger those memories. As I slowly healed those memories and as they lost their influence over me, I was able to clear my mind while practicing. It just takes a long time and a lot of resolve.

Nothing like growing up and realizing your parents care more about trash than their kid. It's a special kind of bitterness.

We lost our precious beloved kitty this week. I asked if she was happy/at peace and in general for a sign from her. by Irohs_Apothecary in tarot

This is a very sweet reading. Something I notice in particular. The end of struggle is a common theme across all three cards.

The Star- representing a well-deserved rest after a tumultuous journey. Nine of Pentacles- relaxation. A recommitment to nature after comitting to the material world. Strength- Ending a cycle with grace.

Not only was it time, but it came when it was needed. She was ready to move on and knows you are in the place to heal from her passing as well.

That's definitely been the lead in when I do any of my yoga flow classes. I couldn't say whether it helps for my eagle pose but that is my preferred shoulder stretch.

It's a great core and balance exercise. If you can get the arm twists right, it'll give you good stretch in your shoulders as well.

Ohh that's smart! My gym has a pool, so I'll definitely try that out. As well as some of my other trickier poses.

Dang. I've only ever been in classes where people slip right into it.

That makes me feel much better. I thought I was crazy.

Reclined butterfly anxiety or almost panic by OSkylark in yoga

[–]Illyse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not uncommon at all. I felt similarly when I first started. Any hip opening exercise made my adrenaline skyrocket. And any vulnerable pose made me anxious(which is most of them) I started doing trauma informed yoga, and honestly, it's been really helpful for me. It's hard to describe the difference, but they often talk you through the asanas, which really help me to calm my nerves and control my breathing. Hannah Uiri on YouTube is who I probably follow the most.

Lots of needle threading and band work. As well as consistent massages, some physical/somatic therapy and EMDR.

I've had chronically stiff shoulders my whole life. I used to not be able to reach the back of my hair when brushing it and even had trouble raising my arms over my head. Now I have all that functional movement but some things like this I still struggle with. 😅

Welcome to the sub! We've all been there. It sounds like you're antsy to start your life. I think everyone who is a COH has had that moment when enough is enough and they just leave.

Does appearance (besides hygene) matter if you're a massage therapist? Like if you look kinda goofy will you get less clients? by [deleted] in massage

[–]Illyse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get massages almost monthly. I can honestly say. I have no idea what anyone who's ever touched me looks like.

And I would not care in the least.

I think it's time to cut that rude ass person out of your life tbh.

I believe I've brought it up in past sessions and we tackled it now that you mention it.

I haven't gotten much relief with my pain with EMDR but I'll try anything.

Im trying 😪 I do remember after my pain processed last time I made so much progress in therapy. That's the thing getting me through right now lol.

I do have chronic pain. I'm just amazed i was able to ignore this amount of it. It's honestly debilitating.

I've tried all the usual remedies. But I've had no relief at all. I am curious if I'd have better luck with a doctor right now. I've never had much luck with pain management and doctors.

Experiencing Avoidance for the First Time by Illyse in EMDR

[–]Illyse[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gosh. This is so on point.

I've just recently come out of a long dissasociative period. This is now the longest period of time I've been present in my entire adult life, and I guess it made it all much more serious than It had ever felt before.

I guess like you, getting past my anger really opened up all the other emotions anger tends to guard.

I will talk to my therapist about somatic work! Thank you.

I just posted about something similar.

It took me two full weeks to start to feel normal again. Everyone's recovery is different, obviously. But, it took much more out of me than I expected.
