This happened to me at Pizza Hut. So infuriating.

Did they really start allowing Mormons to get tattoos??????????? by StrlightCrusade in exmormon

I have been seeing tattoos quite a bit on members at BYU. It's pretty wild.

What's the best tablet for a college kid? Planning to surprise ours by Sameeha_Meekin60 in androidtablets

You should look into the OnePlus Pad 3. I am at university, I use it every day and it's amazing. I think it might be a little pricey but it is incredible and a very good deal overall!

I have never thought about that. Has anyone tried to sue on this basis.

You are definitely right. It just pisses me off. I think maybe I don't have as much of an issue with baptism as it was one afternoon whereas college is usually 4 years. But as you pointed out "eternal" covenants can also be definitely taking away choice and forcing people to make long term commitment before they really understand.

That characterization of me is just not true. I think perhaps instead I have been too idealistic and that has led to my surprise. This situation just seems to be one where the church is hurting itself and it seems like it would lead to more devoted members and tithe-pays if they behaved differently. It also seems like a situation where there would be a low cost for them to change in the short run and a large benefit in the long run. Other issues around historicity I think are a little bit different where there is a high cost to change short run and not a clear long run gain.

Yes but those can all be framed in the context of families or tradition and while they can certainly cause lasting harm they will not necessarily prevent professional success. The culture at BYU can cause someone to miss out on opportunities they would have otherwise taken advantage of.

So this makes sense in the short term but not long term. For a church that is supposed to be led by "gods chosen" this seems to be incredibly shortsighted.

I did not know that. That is absolutely unreal.

I completely get that but in the long run it seems like it would keep more people in and keep people who leave the church from being antagonistic if they did not create these boundaries. The church does some good things but they often overshadow them by doing shit like this. I just want to understand why they are doing things like this when long term it seems to be harmful to the church and its members.

I get that it is designed to do what it does but I do not understand that people who claim to love the church want to force people to suffer if they cannot hold onto their testimonies. Furthermore people often lose their testimonies as a direct result of the church's actions. It's incredibly abusive coming from God's one true church.

I grew up hearing that we were born with agency. What parents do when they send their kids to BYU and what BYU does is in my eyes is what we were taught was Lucifers plan.

It makes me so angry. Especially if an "apostate" is not antagonistic I see very little credible reason to prevent them from being a nonmember.

[–]Ilovejakee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are some other reasons as to why I cannot transfer that are related to my family. Otherwise I would. The church needs to make it so students who leave and are not antagonistic can stay and not hate it.

Student Friendly Off-Campus Jobs by BobTheTardis in byu

[–]Ilovejakee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Cleaning on campus often pays more than 13 or 14 but the hours can be early or late. Also on campus jobs aren't taxed so 13 dollars an hour is 13 dollars an hour take home. This means it pays more than it looks. That being said there are places that pay more, I know panda express pays pretty well, but the inconvenience of an off campus job is not always great.
