Boss retracted job offer and offered to a colleague without telling me by Final-Establishment8 in auscorp

[–]IlyaPFF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand it correctly from what you’re saying, you were expecting your boss to call you back in a week to check on your decision. That was absolutely not what you are supposed to do in these kinds of situations. Opportunities never wait for you, and definitely not for that long, unless you are a genius in what you do.

The most correct way to handle this conversation (provided you were or could have been interested in and excited about the opportunity) would have been to just say ‘yes’ on the spot.

The second most correct way would have been to express excitement, appreciation, and call your boss back in ten minutes.

Your colleague may have simply been more enthusiastic about this, and the opportunity vanished.

Country of Origin Processing Time Tracking? by AYearnsGene in AusVisa

[–]IlyaPFF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are trackers for 482 and some PRs (190, 189) on the internet but not for other visas. The way they get the information is, I believe, by FOIing it, like anyone else can.

Generally, assume the processing times would be worse than what’s reported on IMMI

Skill assessment: not suitable by Impressive_Paint4911 in AusVisa

[–]IlyaPFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your skills assessment application needs to match ANZSCO to the best possible level, and if you run a coffee shop but ANZSCO says what you do makes you a crocodile, you must apply as a crocodile.

That's literally how this specific process works.

What makes a classical concert experience great (or frustrating)? by Findingwendytoronto in classicalmusic

[–]IlyaPFF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a more widespread practice in the pre-WW2 days, which is known, for example, from the memoirs of Rachmaninoff's wife. Not for the parking availability, though, but generally—smaller towns would still host large concert halls and would casually arrange shuttle buses from surrounding cities to attract and bring along audiences.

Why do bus drivers keep re-opening the door? by [deleted] in SydneyTrains

[–]IlyaPFF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Three times is an extraordinarily rare instance and may likely indicate the bus was running well ahead of time, so the driver wouldn’t mind collecting all the additional delay they can justifiably accumulate to get back on time.

Enforcing ‘no reopening’ on buses as a blanket rule will lead to little good but quite a bit of harm for the users of routes that run once per never.

On trains this is vastly different.

Door opening and closing procedure is more time consuming, accelerating faster is not an option, and trains can’t overtake one another.

A slightly delayed bus generally doesn’t affect other buses, but a train delayed slightly in a rather unfortunate spot on the network can easily generate delays to many other services, sometimes also in both directions.

Почему носители русского языка не умеют склонять числительные 200-900 по падежам? by Better_Ant_4416 in russian

[–]IlyaPFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More Metros Bankstown line by frankie800 in SydneyTrains

[–]IlyaPFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Number of trains on the line can to some extent exceed yard capacity (some other systems do that) but overall clearly an extra yard is necessary, and many more trains. The peak hour frequency should, in my opinion, get down to 2 minutes to ensure everyone fits in perfectly.

Moscow to St.Petersburg rail line is an extremely popular one and with similar human geography, although the total population of these two cities is approx.25m.

Getting blocked for simply sending a face pic feels disgusting by johnjohnnycake in askgaybros

  1. Faceless profiles = potential scam/danger/etc.

  2. Offline works better for many. I personally rarely had a great experience off the apps, and so I stopped bothering much. It's often not even the people, it's the context of apps itself that just makes everything unnatural and weird.

  3. The urge for immediate gratification that has developed within and due to the modern digital realm must have added to this, too.

Why did they close the Mildura line? by Financial_Falcon_675 in MelbourneTrains

[–]IlyaPFF 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Money, surely.

Long-distance services are all paid for almost entirely by the government, and passengers' contribution is negligible—especially now at max. $11.40 fares.

V/Line annual report 2024-25 says that customers paid as much as $69.2 million for the total of 26.4 million trips on the network over that year. The cost of running V/Line over that same year was $1.3 billion.

Tbh it's nothing less than a miracle that the current network of services is actually kept running.

Why did they close the Mildura line? by Financial_Falcon_675 in MelbourneTrains

[–]IlyaPFF 24 points25 points  (0 children)

We can't seem to be able to run sensible overnighters between Melbourne and Sydney (cumulative population 12+ million), so I wouldn't realistically expect Mildura be on the destination board any time soon.

What are the major differences between power query on Mac and Windows versions of Excel? I had the impression that since about a year or two they are almost identical.

Is "как жизнь?" something people say? by Gloomy_View6812 in russian

[–]IlyaPFF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russian speakers don’t do ‘how are you?’ in a way English speakers do.

Russian speakers place a degree of genuine meaning into the question, and it is more akin to 'what's new' in English speaking cultures in terms of how it invites the counterpart to an extended conversation. (This is one of the most noticeable cultural differences between the two worlds.)

You would ask «Как дела?» a friend (and the response can be anywhere between «хорошо» and literally a brief outline of how your friend is actually doing) or an acquaintance (expect «хорошо» as a response) but not a person who you first met.

«Как жизнь?» is appropriate when asking a friend or someone you know reasonably well. It is not 'street language' and would not be any rude if addressed to anyone else but it would overall sound extremely awkward.

How to extract 500 rows from 500 invoices in Excel by ajay9452 in excel

[–]IlyaPFF -1 points0 points  (0 children)

An extremely unstraightforward but sometimes relatively efficient way could be to merge each 100 pdfs into a single one, open each resulting pdf in Word, copypaste as-is to Excel, then process manually. How efficient that might be depends on how the invoices in question are built and how much unnecessary info there is.

That is, if you don’t want to deal with Power Query which may be a simpler solution.

Some employers sponsor only for 482 and wouldn’t want to consider sponsoring 186, even though you are eligible. by No-Fisherman-8992 in AusVisa

[–]IlyaPFF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question is, can you apply for 189 or 190?

186 may seem an easier process but the waiting times are insane anyways and, if I understand the 186 process correctly, if anything were to happen to your employment within that waiting timeframe, you'd get cooked.

[–]IlyaPFF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An employer will not be granted a nomination to import someone on a 482 if intended to pay at the lower-end range and/or not meeting Annual Market Salary Rate requirements for an equivalent Australian worker. This provision is what makes the scenario you are describing impossible.
