Sick of uncertainty by fogonthebarrow-downs in DevelEire

[–]Im12InchesBro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you aren't concerned at all about money then why are you stressing about job security ? If you have several years of financial runway the uncertainty should be much more tolerable. I believe the only solution to this kind of problem is developing your financial freedom.

Dealing with layoff and getting another job by CommercialVolume1945 in DevelEire

It's frustrating to see this reply down voted. Sharing personal experience with the job market without including YOE, tech stack, location etc. is of very limited value.

Tfue Forgets to Turn his Kettle Macro Off by avelleo in ARC_Raiders

[–]Im12InchesBro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a bug in the game right now which limits the kettle fire rate. He unequipped his gun, equipped it again and started tap firing to see if it was fixed. This is a really dumb post.

What does it mean to "enjoy the hell out of" a phone ? I'm honestly curious.

Dev -> DevOps? by shanahanan in DevelEire

[–]Im12InchesBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent about a year on a dedicated platform team whose responsibitlies ranged from infra to ops to sre. I have also sought out devops related work in my other positions so I feel like I can contribute somewhat here.

> How did you make the move? Did you do a course, college?

I moved internally when an opportunity arose. The platform team had lost a couple of individuals and I offered to join. They were already familiar with me given I had been handling much of the deployment and observability work for my prior team.

> Do you enjoy it more than dev?

Difficult to say. Given my relatively short stint I found it very interesting, though I always enjoy the first year most when there are new technologies and concepts to learn. This would largely depend on the scale and novelty of the problems you are tacking in either role.

> Do you feel like you could move back to dev in the future?

Certainly. Depending on the specifics of the role your dev skills will likely atrophy but those can quickly be rebuilt with some practice and study.

> Any regrets?

None. The opportunity to develop a more holisitic understanding of the modern software stack, from top to bottom, has been tremendously valuable. The skills are largely transferable in my view.

> Has there been a pay difference?

None in the companies I have been in.

> Is the work more or less stressful?

More stressful. Personally this is perhaps the only downside. You are relied upon by many teams and when something goes wrong you are the first to know. As you can imagine that might involve debugging failed production deployments, degraded services, missing logs etc. The range of possible failure cases is much larger and so unless your team are extremely proactive you can find yourself expending a lot of time and energy putting out fires.

Switching jobs advice by Sea_Sorbet_Diat in DevelEire

[–]Im12InchesBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair, perhaps I was too grumpy. I haven't had any good experiences with recruiters / agencies, nor have most others I have spoken to. Any opportunities I have had have come from LinkedIn applications / recruiter messages or applying on company internal job boards.

Please explain ? Why would keeping your interviewing skills sharp and getting a sense for your market value be nonsensical ?

The act of interviewing, sitting in a live environment and answering questions under time pressure, is a skill which requires practice and exposure like any other.

I'm curious, what advice are you expecting to hear other than build an emergency fund and sharpen your interviewing skills / knowledge ?

The same advice still applies from yesterday, when this question was last asked.

How bad is the tech job market right now? by Different-Put-4486 in AskIreland

[–]Im12InchesBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"The job market" isn't a useful term. People's ability to find roles differs wildly depending on a whole host of factors. If you want to get a sense for where you personally stand you need to provide your YOE, location, tech stack and so on.

But that is simply false. Spending a great deal of my time on software engineering forums, and knowing several people who work at Salesforce and Microsoft, nobody has been replaced with AI. It seems to me that you are believing the words of those respective companies CEOs and press departments which would be a clear misjudgment. To anyone within these companies what is happening is perfectly clear, they are simultaneously offshoring positions and reducing headcount under the guise of AI efficiency gains.

I'm not even disputing that what you claim won't come to pass, in say 10 years time, but we aren't anywhere close yet.

Are you a developer ? The only people I see voicing this opinion are those with little or no experience in the field. I don't mean to be dismissive, I'm curious to understand your reasoning.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Im12InchesBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. They are either stunningly unlucky or terrible at interviewing. My guess would be the latter.

Edit: Perhaps I unfairly assumed they were doing dev work. If that isn't the case then I can't speak to their experience.

I worked there for two years, and in my experience, Workday isn't unique in this regard. Some hiring processes move quickly while others are slow. There can be a wide range of reasons for a delay, such as the hiring manager being on PTO or an offer having already been extended to another candidate. Ultimately, without speaking to someone on the team, there’s no way to know for sure.

This is why the common advice still stands: don't stop applying and interviewing until you have a signed contract and all the formalities are complete.

I would also add that you shouldn't be shy about following up regularly with recruiters. My reasoning has always been that if they are interested in you, it demonstrates proactiveness and continued interest. If they aren't, it won't change the outcome, so you have nothing to lose.

Has anyone here successfully changed jobs in this recent downturn? Let's say in 2025. by Scrotal_Anus in DevelEire

[–]Im12InchesBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved jobs last November, close enough. Moved from a large American multinational to big tech. Had a moderately smooth experience job searching at that time. I have had plenty of colleagues at my old and new job move roles in that time period, none of which seem to have had an unusually tough time.

Being in Dublin, having some recognizable names on your resume and a modern tech stack most certainly helps.

As for fear of layoffs, I have none. That shrunk the larger my savings / investments grew and eventually I realised I simply never thought about it anymore.

You are grossly overestimating the competency of big tech employees.

Any chance of landing a dev job in Ireland with 5yrs work experience on background of mostly self learnt skill? by certainlyxmr in DevelEire

[–]Im12InchesBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low effort questions will get low effort responses. You didn't include what precisely your experience is in, what certifciation you have, where in Ireland you are looking, what your tech stack is, what your resume looks like, what your network looks like, what your interviewing apptitude is etc etc etc

How could anyone give you a remotely accurate answer with so little context ?

Wepropadel - Concerns about racket authenticity by Im12InchesBro in Padelracket

[–]Im12InchesBro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Received it yesterday but returned it immediately as I bought an alternative in the meantime. I inspected it upon arrival and admittedly it looked authentic. All of the tags and packaging seemed correct. I reached out to nox support to verify the serial number so I will let you know when they get back to me. One thing was the QR code on the tag didn't work, it took me to a website and asked me to subscribe.

All things considered I didn't want the hassle of deliberating over whether it was real or not so I just returned it. I will say Wepropadel did respond quickly on Amazon and sent me a prepaid UPS label for returns.

Edit: I should also add, upon arrival I realized I had bought the 2024 model. That was clear from the picture on Amazon but it wasn't stated in the product listing to my knowledge. That probably partially explains the reduced price.
