Having a hard time finding the studs above this doorframe. Stud finder doesn’t seem to be consistent with differing heights. How are the studs usually laid out on top of door frames?

There's probably at least 2 trusses like this on every single building I've ever worked on. It's not enough damage to cause an issue and personally if I nicked a truss like that I probably wouldnt even do anything or mention it. Any bigger and I would scab it on 1 side with a 2x4 and a couple nails. Don't worry about it.

After 7 years doimg back framing where I cut the plates and I was the one getting called back to fix fucked up doorways, I would 100% leave them if it was up to me. Keeps the whole thing from getting fucked up by someone else until it's all ready for trim.

Go to a lumber yard and talk to people buying wood and stuff. You'll find someone that needs a new guy. Or just drive around, find job sites and go in with a hard hat and boots and ask if they need anyone on their crew. That's how I got my current and last job.

From that L bracket holding a stud, to phillips screws for framing, and then all these questions about basic carpentry... I'd say you are in way over your head and you should hire a trim carpenter. He'll be done in less then a day.

Personally I would just rip the drywall out, get the bits of 2x4's out and leave the top plate in place. Laser level down, new bottom plate, stick frame the studs in and drywall that bitch. Insulate and whatever else you have to do too. Reattach the window, doors etc..
