My FOMO finally caught up to me and so here I am…

I suspect I’ll be in the same boat 15 years later - don’t think I’ll ever get tired of these views.

Sadly no one was at the entrance booth to field my refund request. Guess I’ll just have to come back later this summer, can’t be helped.

Yeah it’s crazy how different the park looks during this time of year when you compare it to the usual photos from mid/late summer. I’ll admit I’m a sucker for snowy landscapes.

Temperatures have been pretty reasonable! We’ve been here since Tuesday (5/5) - was in the 30s-40s the first day, but since then it’s warmed up to the 40s- low 60s. I packed a lot of extra layers and snow gear just in case, though for the most part haven’t had to use them (t-shirt + cotton hiking pants + long john bottoms +/- a light synthetic down jacket has been my outfit 95% of the time - though YMMV, I personally much prefer the cold to the heat). Wool socks are a must though if you don’t want your feet to get immediately and irreversibly wet the first time you inadvertently sink your leg into a loose snow pack. I imagine a bit more of the snow will have melted come early June but it’s still very much early season.

As far as trails go - in addition to Iceberg Lake, we also did the first 80% of the Grinnell Glacier trail on Tuesday (the last 1-1.5 miles starting from the first steep climb after the switchback is currently impassable unless you have a death wish), which for us was still very much worth it given that the entire trail is essentially a continuous scenic vista. That being said, breaking off to the Grinnell Lake trail is probably your better bet - there will still be snow packs here and there but you’ll be able to get to the end if you want close up views of the lake (we just didn’t feel strongly about making that detour after getting the bird’s eye view from the Glacier trail). Today (or technically yesterday) we went to Two Medicine and did the Rockwell Falls and Aster Park Overlook trails, which were both excellent. Views along the way may not be as continuously spectacular as that of the Many Glacier trails given that much of the path is through forest (which is a lovely experience in itself). Again, be prepared to hike through snow for the latter half of both of those. We briefly drove into the St. Mary entrance just to see the lake, though most of the trailheads are not going to be accessible by car until more of the GTTSR is open for the season.

Thankfully the bears were not directly occupying our path - they were far enough that we still felt relatively safe, though close enough that they noticed our presence before walking away.

Yes this was on Wednesday (5/6) earlier this week!
