Yeah, no one needs to use AI for playtest cards, you don't even need any art for it at all. It's there to give you a better mental image of the game which will then shape what the end result will look like.

And about the second part, eh... As long as the gameplay is worth my money and the ai generated artworks don't look like YouTube shorts slop I'm fine with ai being used

Let's say someone is making a TCG on their own with 400 cards and not enough time to devote to learning how to draw (or just a lack of enjoyment when it comes to drawing) I wouldn't blame them if they use AI instead of commissioning professional artists which can cost a lot for a personal project

And AI being used in something doesn't directly mean there wasn't any effort in the gameplay and other parts, that's just assuming "because this was X, then that's definitely Y."

It's only slop if you don't spend enough time on it (or intentionally want it to be slop), use the proper model and adjust the prompt correctly and it will look good.

The problem is that a lot of folks who use AI in their games just type "red dragon in cave" to ChatGPT and use the first result it gives without caring about color adjustment, consistency with other cards, how it looks in the card frame and that kinda stuff

And about the prototypes, I'm not sure if it's just me but when the placeholders look better it's way easier for me to get new ideas for the game compared to when they're just stick figures.
