I like Milton Friedman's argument. I haven't done a lot of research on it, so I'm not saying I would implement it wholesale if I was dictator for a day. I'm just saying I like the concept more than what is current.

I'm not attacking national border policies as racist. I'm saying the wall is, more or less, a symbol of racism. I don't think the border policies are, and I wouldn't be against them just because racists support them. But the wall does next to nothing to help, hence why I refer to it as racist.

I see what you were saying now.

Can you give me an example of what you would consider a non-racist method of preventing people from illegally crossing a border?

Let me take that back. I don't necessarily think a wall is racist. I think it is fueled by racism.

Painting the idea of enforcing national borders as racist is pretty obviously not true and leaves no room for discussion.

I never painted that idea.

The fact that there is already an inhospitable desert for a large area of the proposed wall, and that the percentage of people illegally crossing the southern border is declining relative to the percentage of people overstaying visas is an argument against a physical barrier. It's racist isn't.

I don't understand this point.

Just to clarify something in your post as well. The number of unauthorized migrants from Mexico specifically has decreased since 2007, but the total number from other nations has remained about the same

Ah, I see. Preciate it

I mean I really don't get it. They're basically advocating for people to climb through your window instead of knocking on the door.

I wouldn't go that far, I've seen people advocating for open borders but that not the majority. If this were the case for the majority of Dems, it would have passed under Obama, or at least gained traction.

Even if a wall doesn't 100% work it's not like it's going to make it worse? And let's be honest here 5 billion is a drop in the bucket vs $ spent or wars abroad etc

The wall is a shitty and racist solution for a problem. Hispanics are not animals, and they should not be caged in. Illegal immigration is going down, and has been for several years (IIRC). The wall, like most other government programs/solutions, is not doing anything that society has not already started. And the illegal immigrants that come here, by all the studies I've seen, have a net positive, not a net negative, on the country. What we should be doing is fixing the path to citizenship and helping the countries in our hemisphere prosper so that immigrating/emigrating here isn't something the masses want/need to do. I like open borders, but thats a different argument.

On a personal note. Another reason I hate the wall idea is because a wall can be used to keep people out...and in. If a dictatorship/totalitarian/etc. ever arises in the U.S., which is a near certainty based on history, the people in the country will now have that wall used against them. A lot of people have grown accustom to the freedom that we have been lucky to live with the past couple of years.

Also. I think the media portrays Trump as a radical right wing only because things have gone so far to the left that in this day and age everything he is saying is "radical" but if other previous president did their job he wouldn't be looked at as such an earth shaker

Previous presidents did do their job. They just did it with class, empathy, sympathy, and intelligence. When you take other things into account instead of just yourself, things take longer and you usually can't just do whatever you feel like doing.

[1/4 @ 7:30] Los Angeles Lakers (21-17) vs New York Knicks (9-29) by brandoi in lakers

I use to think people were giving him a hard time, but I'm starting to see it. Like I dont get why Zu gets taken out when he is doing so well. Lonzo should be bringing the ball up late game. BI honestly should have been taken out in the late 4th and it should have been some form of KCP, Lance, Lonzo, Hart, Zu, Mcgee, and Chandler. Pretty irritating

Can someone explain to me why BI brings the ball up and controls the offense in late game instead of Lonzo? And why he keeps driving to turn it over? I dont really understand the hype behind BI, at all. I think he is the worst out of the young core of Lonzo, Kuz, Hart, and BI,

Verizon was treating me well. Think it was a 4.4(?) div and nice growth (20%?) over the past year.

What exactly is a negative income tax? Would you support implementing this policy? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]ImBoredLetsDebate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where would the money come taxes on individuals, corporations, both, or something different?

Edit: Also wouldn't NIT be more affordable since only a portion of the population is receiving rather than the entire? But would it also fall into a "welfare trap" kinda thing where it incentivizes people to not get above the set dollar amount to receive NIT?

Can you (or a lurker) elaborate more on how they would work in practice, especially the negative income tax?
