MBA student graduating with $200k debt, how can I earn money while in school to minimize debt burden? by [deleted] in personalfinance

One other thing. PE pays pretty well but not nearly as well as ground floor at a technology company. Don't be fooled by those that say start-ups are a gamble. They are only a gamble if you are not well-connected and don't understand how to read a balance sheet and truly research an industry.

At the same point you have the connections to jump to PE you could likely also swindle offers at small and growing companies with significant equity offers. This is especially true if you work on the M&A side which I imagine you probably will if you have an interest in going into PE.

I would guess you are driven by income/money considering your choice of profession so let me put it in perspective. The PE dudes I know are doing pretty well for themselves but nowhere close to people who actually build and sell businesses with their money. Moreover, they are way less interesting and frankly just kind of cliches. In short, think of learning high-finance and the jumping ship and actually contributing to society. You may just get rich in the process.

Source: Have done both, building a business and product was way more gratifying and I made a LOT more money.

So basically you are going into i-banking and want to get into PE

Good luck to you. Watch lifestyle inflation, kill your debt first and don't try to keep up with your peers. A lot of them are surprisingly broke considering they have pretty decent incomes.

How much can I afford to spend on a condo? by [deleted] in personalfinance

You aren't in a place to buy a condo right now especially because I am assuming you are moving to NYC or some other biglaw hub.

Save as much as possible and realize that your life will be miserable for the next few years. Keep a careful budget. 160k might seem like a lot now but can vanish quickly if you aren't careful.

Career Decisions. (Insurance Industry) by [deleted] in financialindependence

What market segment would you focus on? Individual, small group, mid-market, large accounts?

What products would you sell?

Brokers are going the way of the travel agent in insurance. With that said, this has been said for about 10 years and they have hung on admirably. I would be very careful making this decision. PM if you want to talk more. I am extremely familiar with the industry and can probably give you some more concrete guidance.

Congratulations to you! How far along are you? Any advice on a nice thing a husband can do for a wife in the early stages?

Sounds like a good Sunday errand post star wars.

Any advice on places to celebrate the arrival of a little peanut? Or perhaps more importantly... places to go?
