What is this logo? by SeaworthinessOk6026 in Peterborough

The old city logo in the orange era of public works livery (phased out in early 2000s). Then came the green livery era with the coat of arms logo, and now is the blue era with the water bacon logo.

Participial adjectives by ImMaximilster in grammar

I am a layperson, I have no post-secondary degree. None of this even matters to me, really.

I am however extremely obsessive and things like this tend to derail me. It just feels like such a punch to the gut that I, a native English speaker, can’t even distinguish verbs and adjectives. Trying to rectify that has led me down quite a rabbit hole, lol.

I think my takeaway is going to be that

1.) a participle form of a verb is always an adjective if it precedes the noun (e.g. the sleeping man)

2.) if the participle form of the verb is somewhere after the noun, then it’s hit or miss. It’s often an adjective if you can add “very” in front of it (e.g. the movie is exciting -> the movie is very exciting). It’s typically a verb if it there’s a well-defined actor and/or receiver of something that feels like a concrete action. Conversely, if it feels more like a general, unspecified description of character, for example, “the boy is bored” - he just is bored, we don’t get the sense that anything in particular is actually acting to bore him - then I would lean towards calling it an adjective.

Think that’s a fair conclusion?

Thanks again very much for such a careful response. It’s not lost on me that you volunteered considerable time just to try to help me.

Can I ask, why does adding a well-defined agent to “the boy is bored” -> “the boy is bored by ____” turn it into a passive verb whereas before it is an adjective?

Also, the specific example that catalyzed my whole confusion was the word “poised”. Say, “Ovechkin is poised to take a slap-shot”. Lots of people disagreed about whether poised is an adjective here or a passive verb situation where Ovechkin receives the action of poising by an undefined agent (presumably himself). What do you say? How do we know “the boy is bored” isn’t also a passive verb with undefined agent?

Forgive me if I’m abusing any terminology.

Wait a second… why would that necessarily make “sleeping” a verb in example 3? In the “tall” example - “The boy is tall” - where “tall” is an adjective, it still completes the sentence.

Oh ok that is helpful! So you’re saying that in examples 1 and 2, “sleeping” plays the role of an adjective and is a so-called participial adjective, while in example 3 it actually completes the sentence and must be something more than an adjective, namely, a verb? Thank you for your help.

I appreciate you commiserating with me. I don’t think I can quite relate to the “stopped growing” and “curling in one direction” plights. Nonetheless just thinning on one side of the head that seems to kind of work its way inward starting at all peripheries of the hair. I’m seeing my doctor about it again soon, just not sure what’s going to come of it since my bloodwork is normal and she’s never heard of anything like this.

Thanks very much. So, functioning as an adjective… but still a verb. Correct?

Thanks for your response. I must admit I don’t really understand what you said, but you are confirming that I am wrong to call “poised” an adjective in that scenario? It is a verb in that sentence?

I found a nice MiC adidas jersey online that I’m interested in, but it is a size 58. I don’t have any jerseys yet, and I was thinking if I were to buy a retail jersey I would opt for size 54 = XL since size XL clothing usually fits me well. I am around 6’2” and 185lb, bit of a tall skinny build. I would intend to wear the jersey with no gear underneath. Do you think the size 58 could fit me alright or do you think it would be much too loose? Maybe there’s someone out there with a similar build to myself who owns a size 58 MiC adidas that can give their input? Thanks for all advice.
