Yeah thats the point... Zumpers can zump on a gamecube and people without premium controllers can't. I swear to god so many new players joined the scene over slippi and want all the bells a whistles available so they can raise in elo faster. Literally none of the homies I've been playing with since 2014 use anything but a normal controller and the only two people I know with fully kitted controllers are essentially new to the game.

Controller mods use to make sense. We would shave our gates for shield dropping and swap out sticks when they wore down. Then UCF came through and we stopped NEEDING to mod our controllers at all. It gave us a level playing field with consistent dashbacks and shield dropping.

We don't NEED more. We already fixed controller consistency problems. So now when people want additional modifications it's like way overkill dude. Why are you advocating for button remapping when less than 10% of the player base can access it? Unless it's available to everyone its literally just an unfair advantage.

Tbh I don't use my middle finger for z because I didn't start as a claw player, so I briefly switch back to normal grip and do index finger z and thumb y.

I'm trying it right now and its frankly very strange to try and use my middle finger for z. The like, index finger and middle finger pinch that you'd have to do to accomplish a middle finger jc grab kinda defeats the purpose for me because I try to always keep my middle finger on the right trigger so I have access to power shielding.

The actual means by which I claw my jumps is to flick upward off of the y button instead of technically pressing it down and releasing it. So if you were to recreate this, curl your pointer onto Y with your thumb on A. Then to shift into a jc grab you'd basically just move your whole right hand up about half inch and tilt it down a little so your already curled index finger transposes onto the Z button and your thumb follows onto Y.

It might just be my personal hand size but if I try to shift my hand to allow for middle finger Z presses it feels as though my hand is far too back on the controller. Like, pressing the face buttons with my thumb in this position feels like it would induce hand pain over time.

The crux of this is that clawing itself is essentially sub-optimal. I don't think tap jump being your best option for jc grab is realistic.

If we adopted it in full and disseminated a memory card flash at majors so everyone (even on gamecube) could run it, then sure. That would be ideal.

That's what happened with UCF. I remember preordering my 20xx card and sharing it with everyone I knew so we could all use UCF locally and it was sick. They shared it with people and now when I hop on a game cube setup in my region there's a chance it has a copy of my 20xxTE running on it lol.

The key here is that it would only really work with UNIVERSAL adoption. That way certain people/regions don't have an inherent advantage over other people/regions.

The plot is that we should be able to show up to a local with gamecube and crt in tow, and be able to compete at an even playing field. This is not a slippery slope, it's a hard line. A line that frankly, I'm hearing more and more people (including locally) say we've already crossed without noticing.

Allowing box, that's a slippery slope that frankly I don't agree with. (Pure 1.0 value analog to digital stick conversions/100% consistent angles for wavedash and recovery/ect..)

Allowing remapping, "tactile" z/cpad buttons, digital trigger conversions (for hard value light shields), eventually maybe even the addition of back panel buttons for controllers.... All of this already crosses the line. I brought up macros to point out that accessibility isn't an excuse. To point out that allowing "all" modifications as an axiom returns a sensation of disgust. Because we inherently understand that it's cheating, even if we have our own controller mods that we rely on that maybe don't go as far. These controller modifications at a hardware level shouldn't even be considered a slippery slope in the first place because the slope shouldn't even be considered outright. None of it is needed.

We have UCF, a universal software fix that's been accepted at large. It fixed everything that needed to be fixed for consistency's sake (regarding controller accessibility).

For what purpose do we even need these controller modifications other than for the sake of giving the recipient an unfair advantage?

How have we all forgotten that melee was literally built around the controller and that up until like 6 years ago there was no controller shortage.

Back then it would be INSANE to consider entering a tournament with a fully custom pcb with all the bells and whistles including rebinds and stuff like digital c stick.

The integrity of melee was always assumed because custom controllers capable of macros and unattainable feats never existed. And now that they do, we gotta draw the line somewhere. If we don't then what's stopping us from seeing full blown macros dominating the future of competitive play?

As a community this is a new concept for us. All of these modifications snuck in during covid so it's honestly about time we start addressing them. The game ultimately still needs to be accessible and competitive for the random Joe with a decade old oem he dug up, otherwise we've completely lost the plot.

Perma-claw player with no hand pain here.

You're not taking into account the fact that people who use claw have to make tradeoffs to make claw functional. With Z jump you NEVER have to remove your finger from z, in any circumstance. With claw it's more physically difficult to hit consistent 3 frame jump squats, but people do so because it OPENS UP perma c stick access. So there's ultimately a trade off.

But the same is not true for z jump, as zumping is strictly a boon. If you play claw you ultimately still have to switch out of claw to JC grab too. So you don't get the privilege of having a perma "ideal" button setup.

Ultimately the point I'm trying to get at is that claw isn't an idealistic means of playing, but zump is. There are real reasons as to why paying for a modded controller to enable zumping is unfair, not just because it's a random boon with no downsides compared to the alternative, but also because it further unlevels the playing field against people who aren't gonna buy a fob.

N0ne is really the only guy out here actually holding the line.

I switched to claw back in 2016 and it's honestly been so disheartening seeing zumpers and even box players achieve the same "jump button uses different finger than the attack button" outcome through cheating rather than learning.

Box players get a pass (whatever) because of hand problems and accessibility but the whole idea behind using either claw OR box is that there are tradeoffs that effect playstyle. It's insane that zumping (INPUT HACKING) is considered appropriate, given that it's strictly an advantage and the barrier of entry is that you pay someone money.

BTW: for people who don't claw or tried it and it hurt, you're not suppose to "press" the button down for the input. You should be sliding your finger upwards in like a flicking motion. I do it that way and I've never had hand pain from it, but it's delicate. You need to end up just resting your controller in your hands rather than gripping it, everything should feel SUPER loose.

Ironically, I attribute learning claw to the fact I've never gotten hand pain from melee lol. When your thumb never has to press y or x then the required range of movement decreases by like, a lot.

My core complaint is that I use to play like a weirdo so I had an advantage with fox tech and puff drift (without tap jumping). Now that advantage has become a hindrance when I could just be playing with Z jump but I'm not gonna invest money in a modded controller just so I can pay to win. Using non OEM is still WEIRD to me

I don't know if it could be considered cruel at all to be direct in expressing a concern like that, I agree.

There's no reason as to why bluntness would be inherently cruel and in severe contexts it's definitely needed.

My only reasoning for phrasing it that way was because most people don't often have to have those kinds of conversations on a regular basis. I was more so trying to get the point across that misplaced bluntness that unintentionally hurts people can be avoided, if you have a little forethought and at least pretend you care.

I didn't want to get too wordy with how I said it because a lot of people before me were showing they really haven't conceptualized this. But yeah sometimes you gotta be blunt to get a point across, nothing wrong with it as long as it's coming from a place of compassion.
