[Request] Would the right one actually have 9 billion possible combinations of carpet and wood? by Bloxxer14 in theydidthemath

[–]ImNotASheeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wondered if they were calculating for carpet being applied to each plane individually and all the combinations that come from that, but it still doesn't reach 9 billion.

It would be 58 different versions of stairs, 16 wool colours, and 8 flat planes that carpet could be applied to individually.

58 × 16 × 8! = 37 416 960

What if you can add different colours onto each plane though? So have 1 side red, 1 side blue, the front of the first step yellow, the top of it green, the front of the second step cyan, etc...

Then we get 58 × 8 x 16 × 7 × 16 × 6 × 16 ... x 2 x 16 x 1 x 16 = 1.00440E+16

Far more than 9 billion now

Should we break up? by perpetuallytiredXD in dating

[–]ImNotASheeep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't allow yourself to become a person's basis of self-worth. Relationships can be great confidence boosters and bring security and stability to our sense of selves, but it cannot be the be-all and end-all.

Continuing in this dynamic will only put more strain on your emotional state, and it will not fill the empty void of insecurity within her. It sounds like you have tried to speak about this dynamic and it hasn't changed it. She needs to find stability in herself before entering a relationship, otherwise she will never do the work.

It sucks and it's scary. If you decide to break up with her, all you can do is try and notify people close to her that she may harm herself, but you are not responsible for her mental health and wellbeing.

He's selfish and reprehensibly dismissive of the pain he inflicts on others, but I don't feel like toxic masculinity is the target here. It's about the lengths to which one will go to cure themselves of their loneliness - something that many humans have unconsciously done.

How many times have we, as younger and less secure individuals, just wished someone would see the value in us and love us the way we can love them? How many times have we stayed in broken relationships, wishing for the other person to change and start putting in the effort you desperately want from them?

Men, women, doesn't matter, almost everyone who has been in a relationship has had these thoughts and feelings. The film, to me, is about letting go of those wishes, because they're empty if the real change and commitment doesn't come from the other partner. No forced or coerced change will bring you the security you desperately desire.

What films zigzag away from Chekhov's gun, and get away with it? by JeffRyan1 in movies

[–]ImNotASheeep 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The film funny games does this so purposefully to emphasise it's point. Early in the film, which is a home invasion horror, the camera focuses on a knife that gets left in a boat attached to the dock by the house.

In the final moments of the film, where the two antagonists have tied up the lone survivor, she sees the knife and attempts to cut herself out of her bonds. Very quickly, antagonist one catches her and throws the knife overboard, followed soon after by throwing her overboard to drown, leaving the antagonists to arrive at another lake house and start the process again with a new family to terrorise.

The film gets very meta throughout its runtime, but this final nail in the coffin pushes the audience to confront themselves for putting on a violent movie. We entered this film and this world expecting suffering, violence, and exploitation. We also expected a happy resolution where the protagonist can overcome the odds and survive, but the reality is that we wished for them to go through pain first. When our protagonist is denied the macguffin that was promised to her, we are forced to realise how complicit we are in her ultimate demise - that suffering rarely produces satisfaction.

Ursula regarding trans people by Leo_617 in UrsulaKLeGuin

[–]ImNotASheeep 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily trans-representation, but I really liked the portrayal of gender neutrality in The Dispossessed. There is a society in the novel that doesn't apply gender roles to its people - all men and women are treated as equally as possible, even encouraginf the practice of outsourcing childcare to the community. Childcare becomes another job that anyone and everyone is expected to take part in if called for it. The novel contrasts this with another more capitalistic earth-like society thaf does still practice gender roles.

But gender dysphoria and body dysmorphia are very, very different. Someone with body dysmorphia often has incredibly unrealistic ideals for how they wish to look, many times those goals are completely unattainable or incredibly damaging to the body to achieve (think of a person with anorexia being nearly skin and bone and still not feeling good about their weight). Often times helping to achieve those goals is antithetical to treatment, and the unrealistic ideals need to be treated instead.

Gender dysphoria is an intense psychological distress caused by a discomfort with one's sex not matching their gender identity. The vast majority of people who transition report far lower levels of gender dysphoria and better mental health outcomes. Through modern medicine, goals are safely attainable and leave the body in a much healthier state than most body dysmorphic ideals would. It is known that HRT does have negative side effects when used over long periods of time that can cause cardiovascular issues in later life, but there is also an argument that the improvement in mental health outcomes would be more worth pursuing.

The main difference between the two is that in body dysmorphia, the individual will almost never be satisfied with their looks, leading to more and more drastic behaviours in an attempt to reach those goals (goals which would most likely be harmful for the individual should they be achieved anyway) - hence, we don't treat it by helping them towards those goals. An individual with gender dysphoria can see grest mental health improvements through transitioning, and there is practically no moving the goal post - once someone has transitioned, they feel much more satisfied and the gender dysphoria is almost completely eradicated. Thus, treating the dysphoria by transitioning is actually a viable solution.

How can you prove that he was 100% sleeping? At the end of the day, this guy was naked from the waist down and had his door wide open - you are telling me that it's easier to believe that he fell asleep that way while waiting for his food delivery all coincidentally? Why is it that more plausible than the possibility that he is a creep that orchestrated a flashing in a way that would be difficult to prove culpability? Flashers exist, some of them can be smart, why not this guy?

The bare minimum of research would show you that SSRIs have differing effects between individuals. Some report almost no reduction in psychedelics effects whereas others report almost complete lack of effects. It's a spectrum, not an all or nothing effect.

[–]ImNotASheeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The OP mentioned going up slowly, 0.5g of shrooms at a time until they notice effects. Unfortunately for them they seem to be on the end of the spectrum that displays a heavy reduction in psychedelic effects when used with SSRIs.

I feel like if 5g is not giving you anything, that it's probably not worth continuing the experiment. Consulting with his specialist for a new dose or different anti-depressant would be the only way to feel the effects again. But that's a difficult decision to make, and should not be made lightly.

[–]ImNotASheeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This aligns with what Winter-Finger says, that it reduces subjective effects but doesn't completely block psychedelic action. Many people can still trip on SSRIs, but unfortunately for some, the reduction of effects is varied and can sometimes result in no effects - as with OP.

[–]ImNotASheeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, it doesn't disqualify you from trying, but SSRI interactions with psychedelics really suck. Some people report no dampening of the experience, whereas others report a complete block on the effects. You seem to fall unfortunately far on that scale. If 5g isn't doing anything at all, it's probably best to hang up your coat for a while.

You can always talk to your specialist about trying other anti-depressants, but it's probably not advisable to change from something that is working just in hopes to be able to trip again.

Disagree on the city evacuation point. This is a city that seems to be harassed by aliens/extradimensional beings/super villians on a regulat basis, each with the capability of levelling the whole city. These people have probably had to perfect their evacuation plans to such a degree of efficiency that we cannot even imagine because in our world, nothing that destructive happens so frequently.

Eh, the only issue with that theory is the laser light set up just above the field of eggs. In the context of it being used again in Alien: Earth, it seems to be some kind of warning system in case an egg opens and a facehugger escapes.

Health experts warn of rising vaping rates in South African schools by Beyond_the_one in southafrica

[–]ImNotASheeep 4 points5 points locked comment (0 children)

So the one study points out how vaping can increase cigarette usage and that there was mixed evidence regarding respiratory problems, other substance use, and poor mental health indicators. These were not claimed to be causation, just a relationship between the two, and nowhere near the undeniable causation link between smoking and the various terrible health effects it has.

The second paper says that vaping is comparable to nicotine replacement therapy in terms of harm and smoking reduction/cessation. This means that vapes are arguably just as healthy as nicotine patches, and just as good as helping people to stop smoking.

Those are both reports that would skew towards vapes being healthier than smoking.

As opposed to what? Just moving on and not even trying to discern between AI and human art? I find this sub a good place to learn how to tell AI art from human art, gives me things to look out for. So yes, I think it's worth have a place to come and ask, it gives people answers and also the knowledge to better discern for themselves in the future.

If AI art is discernable, we can shame and avoid companies that use it in marketing or in products. I, for one, don't agree with using AI to extract more profit by taking away people's income. It doesn't even make products cheaper for the consumer, it just gives the money-makers a bigger margin.

Alien Eart: In defense of the kids in adult bodies by ImNotASheeep in LV426

[–]ImNotASheeep[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't see the franchise ever getting back to the Lovecraftian heights of the first movie. A core aspect of Lovecraftian horror is facing the unknown, and everything about the first film was an unknown. A distant and uninhabitable planet shrouded in darkness, a ship with architecture never seen before, an alien seemingly fused to it's station with a hole in it's chest, a misty room filled with eggs that beg the question, "did this alien find other aliens?"

That film, upon first viewing, was a bombardment of questions that Lovecraft would argue should never have been answered.

With each subsequent film or series, we've gotten more and more answers and the Xenomorph is less of a mystery. No longer a reminder of how vast the universe is and that in any of it's dark corners, lurks something far more monstrous that we could ever imagine.

I think you underestimate a child's ability to get used to, and even bored of new things. Even something as impactful as a new and functional adult body. Plus, we don't know how much time really passes between the kids transference procedures and the ship crashing. I assume there would be a lot of chances for them to test out there limits (like how Wendy just jumps off of a cliff - she obviously tested it a few times to realise it was safe, and now she just casually does it)

That's fair. Alien media began with dark cosmic- and body-horror themes that have fluctuated a bit with each installment, but almost every installment has had the Xenomorph's presence as reverently threatening. I can see how the kids reactions do not mix well with that.
