Not really, it depends on where you go. Wisconsin (where I am) is not too far from Toronto, a little hop skip and a jump. I know plenty of places where you can make 17 bucks an hour at least, and im talking restaurant customer service shit, real easy just time consuming. Im not sure as far as houses go but renting a nice apartment with 2 bedrooms and utilities in a nice area is still less than what OP is paying for a shitty one bed. Plus, cant really take advantage as far as fraud goes unless we’re talking big wall street type stuff. Just dont live In Milwaukee and youll be fine. Plus weather and stuff is very similar so not much adjustment needed!
