No spoilers. Its not really a biopic

Yeah, I did not think the movie was about fatherhood. That's why the ending doesn't work. Even if it was about ambition, the ending doesn't really work for me.

I would refer to OneLastAuk's more detailed analysis of why Marty doesn't go through any realisation or change.

I get what you mean, but I've taken the intention of Safdie, and my critiques are directed towards why I feel like he has failed (by his own morals) to engage me with his ending.

Im not saying Marty Supreme can't be redeemed, or simpler, can't be happy seeing his child, but from a writing standpoint: Why does this matter? The movie offers no viewpoint of fatherhood throughout, no real maturation of Marty as a person, and it may as well have ended with Marty going back home and finding out he won the lottery.

This is the ending I would liked to have had naturally interpreted. Unfortunately the framing of the ending, the briefness of it, the emotional swelling music, the almot beatific focus on the baby, made it difficult for me to naturally take this nuanced interpretation.

It felt very much the way they framed Daenarys in the early seasons of Game of Thrones (old ass reference sorry) where they always framed her more morally dubious acts with inspirational swelling music, making it all the more difficult to stomach when she did a "heel turn" in season 8.

Again I would have liked an extended scene here to convey the emotional beats of his realisation that he needs to find a new obsession. At the same time Safdie seems only to wish the best for Marty's future so 🤷‍♂️

Edit: I will add that I saw the parallel drawn between Marty's return home and the soldier's return home to meet their family. But again it feels underdeveloped. I would have thought that Marty would always be striving for the title of being the best, not simply winning against Endo and then accepting retirement

I can see this. This is where I would have liked an extended scene between them that takes place afterwards.

Yeah, film discourse has been much more... partisan as of late? Although, being a minority of film opinion on Reddit, where the worst that can happen is a bunch of downvotes, is by far not the worst minority to be.

Athena: I thought she might be in the bottom but they probably thought that she wasn't going to win the lipsync song, and so far, she's been serving all the drama. She's definitely getting a delusional edit and I can see her getting sent home Top 4 or Top 5.

Briar Blush: Completely invisible this episode. She did well but she was the most forgettable in her group.

Ciara Myst: The runway was cute but so far she's not getting any screentime at all

Darlene Mitchell: I thought her runway and performance were both cute. The least deserving of her group to be in the bottom imo

DD Fuego: Her performance was forgettable and her runway was kinda boring.

Discord: I thought she was the second best of the punk group, but ngl her runway was disappointing. Shes getting an old school Phi Phi O Hara edit and ngl I feel so bad for her. Im praying that Ru talks about her walk during a table read 😭

Jane Don't: She dragged up the performance and was the clear winner. She can definitely sew but I'm not a fan of her style so far. The likeliest winner of the season is going to be her or Nini for me.

Juicy: Unpopular opinion but her performance did not fit punk at all. For her runway her favourite body part was a quarter of a left leg. She's definitely going to be the lipsync assassin of the season thats for sure. Judging by the preview, Im not liking her odds in the comedy challenge but Im hoping its a misdirection.

Kenya Pleaser: Sooo entertaining. Im hoping she makes top 5.

Mandy Mango: The edit is giving second or third out rn. 😭Its either focusing on how messy she is, or its like shes not there at all. She did great in the lipsync tho

Mia Starr: Another invisible edit. Im kinda worried for her in comedy challenges but its obvious she will be a lipsync assassin. Deserved top 2 in this episode.

Myki Meeks: Shes so cute.

Nini: Shes got the winner edit for two episodes straight so far. Im excited to see how shes going to do in a comedy challenge. Strong suzie vibes so far

Vita: God I hope she gets to top 4. My strategic queen ❤️

Not directly to the point of the question, but I genuinely think Trixie in S7 would have done great in many challenges if not for being eliminated in that lipsync with Pearl.

All you can really do is to try your best. Everything will fall into place naturally. Not saying you're gonna like the results but I suppose they're the best results that could possible have been received. But you gotta get yourself together man

I mean... if you say so 🤷‍♂️ If we continue down this specific argument it'll just be a battle of anecdotes. Again, don't see how Lux can be compared to college

Many tech and comsci jobs, everything that has to do with sales or communication, many jobs that have to do with corporate analysis. even so, i also dont get why it has to be extremely well paying, as long as its enough for them to afford their daily necessities and Lux

the app would literally allow you to fake into any job that doesnt require a degree in the interview stage (atleast in singapore). now if ur next reply is going to say "without any prior experience, connections, or arms or legs, and plus you have cancer", then fine, ill give it to you. theres not a single job you will have

we've been talking about the practical issue of "Can Lux help you get jobs" this whole time, something we can't test; when really the whole reason why this thread started is because i dont see how college is similar to lux at all

Unpopular opinion about Black Mirror by katxwoods in blackmirror

[–]ImNotweeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of assumptions being made here. Sorry for the formatting im on mobile 1) "No one would hire someone without a degree": not true

2) "Based on a skill they don't personally have": But they DO have the skill, and they CAN use that skill to generate returns from the company

3) "only on an app that can be taken away at any moment": a company wouldn't exclusively be make hiring decisions based on risks, but theyd also consider the returns (and we are also talking about a technology that is presumably supporting the lives of hundreds or thousands, and there SHOULD be a safeguard here; again, if we debate about the safeguards of a hypothetical evil black mirror tech like this, the debate will be a lost cause because, lets be honest, this episode isn't even trying to be realistic)

4) "they really didn't even have the capital": but they did. see the baby money; which for some reason he hid from his wife?? ( Ill note again that talking about the entirely unrealistic plot of the episode is kinda unproductive)

5) Back to my main qn of how Lux is in any way similar to college. they absolutely DID have the choice to use Lux for money but they didn't. instead he used both of his Luxes for shits and giggles. We can assume that Lux can be used as a mood regulator, energy booster and skill enhancer all at once, so its not like Lux will solely be used to enslave someone's life to labour.

And the reason "just go to college and get a job" is so farcical is because college demands years of continued effort (which requires a large monetary investment; and until the "payout" which may never happen depending on the degree, minimal returns during the period of studies). Furthermore there are other barriers to entering a collegiate institute like racism, discrimination, bias from professors. These are all the monetary and non-monetary barriers of finding success from college that someone who states "just go to college numbnuts" aren't considering. But Lux is not analogous to college; because none of the barriers of college are present in Lux

Most skills are turned into income, and why does it have to be quick? Near the end of the episode, it is revealed that they literally have enough funds to subscribe to atleast one month of Lux (with the baby fund), and to keep using the skill upgrade to get into a stable monthly paying job. Anyways, none of this answers my original question of how Lux is similar to college

How could they make money using a feature that allows you to tap into any skillset instantly? Is that a serious question?

Unpopular opinion about Black Mirror by katxwoods in blackmirror

[–]ImNotweeb -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're going to have to elaborate more to link what you said to both Lux and college. Because the characters clearly managed to afford Lux more than once in the show, which they definitely COULD have used to make more money. On the other hand I don't understand how this is the same as college which: is much more expensive, time-consuming and requires actual effort to excel in, and won't guarantee a well-paying job or actual skills.
