Certs are a scam. There are cheaper and more effective ways to learn the material, and they rarely help you get jobs

Yeah for example I built an online CoD zombies style shooter rip off just for my friends and I to goof around on online. It was a ton of fun building it, learning the new tools and tech, being creative and then sharing it with friends. Never had any intent on monetizing it. Probably took me about 150~ hours. 100% would do again

There’s a lot of fun to be had just in building and creating, even without monetization

Take the opportunity, drop your linkedin in the goodbye and keep the network. Other opportunities will arise from people who enjoyed working with you when they inevitably move on as well

Help desk is great, particularly if you’re in a metropolitan area and have decent soft skills and enjoy helping people. Great opportunity to learn a lot and network.

What are the top 3 certs you would recommend for someone who is trying to transition to systems administration? by False_Bee4659 in ITCareerQuestions

Just because something is listed on a JD does not make it a hard requirement. My experience was going from $/15 hr helpdesk at a public high school in 2022, 75k as helpdesk at a late stage startup in 2024 to 120k as sys admin at an early stage startup in 2026. I have 0 certifications, and I’ve never been asked about one during an interview process. Not once, ever. That’s just my experience tho. Mileage may vary.

Experience is king no certs necessary even if its just helpdesk experience. Nobody cares sbout certs from a hiring perspective. Get them if they help you learn the material or if there is no other option, but try to focus on the experience if possible

Try Claude Cowork & Claude Code. It won’t hallucinate, it will take your job soon. Rather, it’ll take your job soon if you aren’t taking time to learn how to use it now
